Latest Canon Rumors (new 50mm f/1.4 with IS and EOS 7D II)

The rumors are reported by Northlight Images.

About the EOS 7D Mark II they report that two different dealer sources said that

[…] the 7D2 is being actively positioned against an upcoming D400 from Nikon and will be announced around the same time along with new lenses (the 50/1.4 should join the new range of IS primes for example)

Yes, and there should be soon a new 50mm f/1.4 lens with added image stabilization. The [shoplink 175]actual one (which still is an outstanding lens)[/shoplink] dates back to 1993. NL writes

As part of Canon's revamp of their prime lens range, expect a replacement for the […] 50/1.4, with added image stabilisation next year

New patent describes a super compact OVF (for small DSLR or mirrorless?)

The latest patent spotted by Egami (translation here) describes a Canon developed Optical Viewfinder with 100% field of view. The special thing about that patent is that the viewfinder is a lot smaller than current finders. It sounds like a perfect solution for a new super small Canon DSLR or a future Mirrorless camera with Optical or Hybrid viewfinder. Otherwise…why do it that small?

Canon Set To Release An EF 800 f/5.6L IS II Lens In 2013?

Canon Rumors has been told that Canon could release a new 800mm in 2013. The EF 800 f/5.6L IS II lens could have a newly developed 6 stops image stabilization system. The weight is said to be less than the [shoplink 106]EF 600 f/4L IS II[/shoplink]

Moreover, there are rumors about new supertelephoto zooms and 400mm primes. No timetable or schedule was suggested.

Finally the 1.4 teleconverter sported on the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is said to get featured on more lenses in the future, at least the technology appears to be tested on other lenses.

Canon EOS-M with built-in EVF coming the second half of 2013.

A faked EOS-M with builtin EVF via dpreview forum. Attention: not the real camera!!!

Canon is well known for hiding their intentions. Back when they launched the EOS-M they said that there is actually no need for a mirrorless camera to have an electronic viewfinder. A new source told us the truth: Back when the EOS-M was launched Canon simply had not the necessarily mature tech to offer an external viewfinder for the EOS-M. But Canon is right now developing a new EOS-M camera with built-in viewfinder. Design is a lot close to the current EOS-M but it has a EVF in the corner like the Fuji X-E1 and Sony NEX-6. Definitely no hybrid OVF/EVF, but a “classic” electronic EVF will be used. Unlike rumors posted elsewhere the camera is not hitting stores in Spring but much later (second half of the 2013).

In summary:
EOS-M with built-in EVF
Keeps the modern look design of the EOS-M. (no retro style)
Hit the stores in late 2013.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4 IS 1.4x TC Next To Be Released?

Canon Rumors reports that one of their readers had the chance to play around (in South Africa) with Canon`s so much anticipated EF 200-400mm f/4 IS 1.4x TC lens, and to talk about it with a Canon product manager. Quoting CR regarding the specs:

  • This was the first time that this specific model was on public display.
  • Changes were made post Olympics-this is probably the final version.
  • This one is a production model.
  • Pricing: somewhere around $11000.
  • Weight: No official comment from Canon. Ben thinks it feels nearly the same weight as the 600 F4 II.
  • Focus speed the same as 500 II on 1DX, virtually instantaneous.
  • Flip switch for converter works like a dream-instant magnification.
  • One has to move L hand from front to flip switch, when hand holding the lens more difficult to flip switch than with lens on mono pod.
  • Availability: next 2-3 months.

Looks like production models already exist.
