RUMOR: Canon G1 X available in Asia this week?

According to a discussion going on in the dpreview Canon Talk forum (click here) the G1 X could be available in Hong Kong any day from now. Some of the users report that shops in Hong Kong are expecting the G1 X to be available starting by this week. These are exciting news. Let’s hope that Canon answer (is it, really? Nothing else we can expect from Canon?) to the growing mirrorless system camera phenomenon will soon be available for the rest of us too.

Canon 5D Mark III buzz of the moment

Since the Aperture Academy blog made its post about the Canon 200-400mm and 600mm prototype lens and a mysterious Canon body, there has been a lot of speculation about what this body could be. The 5D Mark III, the 7D Mark II, or maybe a totally new camera that Canon has developed? Canon 5D X, Canon 6D, and so on. Let your imagination run freely.

Let’s have a look at the most revealing of the pictures published on the AA blog. The person using the equipment is supposed to be a Canon employee doing some field-testing of the lens prototypes, and of the apparently totally new camera body.

A new kid on the block?

We have some considerations.

  • It’s clearly a body of the size of a 5D or 7D with an attached battery grip and there is no build-in flash.
  • The battery grip seems to have a joystick.
  • The display looks like it has a 16:9 format

Stephen Oachs, the author of the post, writes: «I see the “Q” button located by the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the top left». In other words, there is one thing that can be assumed to be true: this is a Canon body we have not seen before.

After having published the pics, Mr. Oachs has been accused of having been delivered faked images (we don’t think so). In a follow-up to the original post, he attached a link to the original RAW file he shot of the lens and the body.

All pictures taken by Mr. Oachs can be seen on the Aperture Academy blog (click here).

Pentax Q, a very skilled competitor

Plenty of news this summer!
Sony has just released his new NEX-C3 and 30mm macro lens, Panasonic GF3 (16MPX) on June 13, Olympus E-P3 on June 30, Sony NEX-7 (24MPX) and the more expected news will arrive on August/September: Panasonic PRO GF camera and Pentax Q (12 MPX APS-C).
New market strategies are setting: the pro-band is shrinking, most of the companies are working on the middle level and the winning solutions are a great bet for everyone..
However… the most interesting things will come definitely on August-September.

We don’t know enough about Panasonic, but at the moment the interchangeable lens camera Pentax Q is the most skilled competitor.
Based on the Photo Rumors information, those are the specs:
• 12MP backlit sensor
• HD movie recording (720p)
• RAW capabilities
• Available in tow color: black and white
• Vary small and compact in size
• Price around 700 EUR
• Several lenses will be announced including a fisheye lens.

A very Competitive price and, therefore, a great challenge for Canon!
We’ll see…
