[Photokina] New Canon Powershot Around The Corner, It’s G15 (with f/1.8 lens)

You may wonder where the G13 and G14 got lost, but here it is: Canon’s new PowerShot G15. No hints so far about specs and price, except that it has an f/1.8 lens. Flash is pop-up. In any case it proofs that Canon is still keeping the PowerShot line alive, even after the PowerShot G1 X, Canon’s first attempt to make a mirrorless camera (though without interchangeable lenses).

Talking About Entry-Level Full Frame DSLRs Price Tags (hint: Nikon’s D600 not as cheap as expected, $2800?)

While we are waiting to know more about Canon’s entry-level full frame DSLR (EOS 6D) it is good to learn that Nikon’s entry-level FF DSLR, the D600, will not be as cheap as expected. The image above was sent to me. It shows prices for the D600 and some lenses. I suppose the first entry refers to a D600 body only option. You can see that the D600’s price is 218,000 Yen, which roughly corresponds to €2170/$2800! So, by no mean the low price ($1500) that was so much touted over the Internet. However, I am simply converting currencies here. The reported price is for Japan. Nikon could easily decide to give another price tag to the D600, especially if you consider that the Nikon D800 costs around $3000.

If this will be the D600’s price, then this may be a bad news. Such a price tag will not force Canon to align the price of the EOS 6D. In other words, if Nikon’s D600 would cost $1500, then Canon would be under pressure to sell its own entry-level FF DSLR at a similar, competitive price.

[Rumor] More Canon EOS 6D (Entry-Level FF) Tidbits And Specs

Most of us expect Canon to announce a new DSLR, eventually this week, or at Photokina. Most people agree that there will be just one DSLR that Canon will introduce for Photokina. But…which one? Rumors have word that it will be an entry-level full frame camera named EOS 6D. After the first (supposed) specs leaked a few days ago, CR is reporting more about the 6D’s (supposed) specifications:

  • 22MP full frame
  • Flip out screen, Built in flash
  • 19 pt AF, 63 zone metering
  • Single Digic 5+
  • 4.9 fps (Also heard 4.5fps)
  • 3 inch LCD (We’d previously heard touchscreen)
  • ISO 12,800
  • New battery and grip – new GPS and WiFi grip option.
  • Built in ‘connectivity and sharing’ software

However, there has immediately been an update:

  • Does not have a flip out screen
  • It’s 4.5fps not 4.9
  • No built in flash

All this specs have to be taken with a pinch of salt. All the rumors (published here and on other sites) seem to come from new sources, and are often contradictory. At least none of my trusted sources told me anything about an upcoming EOS 6D. I am disappointed by the suggested AF system. 19pt/63 zone metering works perfectly, but there a are more evolved options out there.

We will soon know. In the meantime let me know your thoughts.

[Rumor] Canon EOS 6D Entry-Level Full Frame DSLR Coming This Week? (Update)

Update: I got a similar rumor: Canon should announce a “not entry-level or amateur” DSLR “with a big sensor” in the upcoming week. No mention of the name “6D” nor if it is full frame or not. We can only wait to see.

That’s what a rumour reported by CR is suggesting. The murmured specs:

  • 22mp (Same sensor as 5D2)
  • 4.5 fps
  • Touchscreen
  • Same AF system as 7D
  • Lower build quality than the 5D Mark III

I am somewhat puzzled by the “same sensor as 5D2” part. It sounds weird to me that Canon will release a new DSLR with a 3 years old sensor.
