(CW5) Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM image and specs leaked (announcement soon)

Digicame-info posted the first picture and specs of the upcoming Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. Announcement is expected very soon.

  • Lens arrangement 5-group, six (Construction: 6 elements in 5 groups)
  • Full-frame compatible)
  • Digital optimized coating (The lens coating is optimized for digital cameras)
  • Stepping motor (STM)
  • Full-time manual focus
  • Total length 39.3mm
  • Weight 160g

I guess this will be the new Nifty-Fifty, i.e. this lens will replace the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (the Nifty-Fifty). And, as you can see, it seems there is no IS on board. B&H has refurbished EF 50mm f/1.8 II on sale for $79.99.

  • Nice but a 50 f1.4/1.8 IS USM would have been nicer. I won’t buy this STM cheapo…

IMO, this still leaves room for a EF 50mm f/1.4 IS USM, from both a cost and features standpoint.

    • I hope so. I really want a good 50 at a medium price. The L version is still very expensive and it’s IQ is mediocre at best…Only the super large aperture and the build is better than a Sigma 50 1.4 Art for example.

Based on past lenses, I doubt they’ll put IS in any updated 50mm f/1.4 lens. Maybe a 50mm f/2 lens, though.

Will the 85mm f/1.8 and 100mm f/2.0 lenses be upgraded soon? I have the 35mm f/2.0 IS USM and the 100mm f/2.0 USM. My ocd can’t take the different lens styling between the two.

One of the key reasons I thought for STM was the silent operation that benefits video shooting.
But so far, not one of the STM primes has also had IS – another essential for video

The lens doesn’t have IS, do it?

    • Nope, it doesn’t. But a future USM version (I guess a non-L one) will have it.

Comparison to the Canon 40mm STM lens.

Anyone know how many blades they’re going to use for the aperture ring? It’s my least liked thing about the current Nifty Fifty.

    • Shivam

      7 blades
