Canon press release:

Canon achieves a world’s first as production of EF interchangeable lenses surpasses 100 million mark

TOKYO, Japan, April 30, 2014—Canon Inc. today celebrated an impressive lens-manufacturing milestone with the production on April 22, 2014, of the Company’s 100-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras—an EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x.

Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant, which continues to play a central role in Canon’s lens manufacturing operations. In May 2013, EF lens production surpassed the 90-million-unit mark and now, approximately eleven months later, the Company is commemorating its first-in-the-world1 achievement of having manufactured 100 million lenses.

Simple And Easy Inkjet To Wood Transfer Hack (DIY)

Super cool inkjet to wood photo transfer technique, simple and easy DIY task.

Steve Ramsey from Woodworking for Mere Mortals made the video above. It lasts less than 2 minutes and is probably one of the coolest hacks I’ve seen since long. You need:

  • an inkjet printer
  • a non-porous paper (like glossy paper, in the video the left-over from an address label sheet was used)
  • the piece of wood where you want to put the pic
  • lacquer to fix and protect the image

New Canon EF Lenses 101 Video: Tilt-Shift Lenses

CanonUSA on Youtube posted a new video of their ongoing series “Canon EF lenses 101”. This video is about tilt-shift lenses. As usual, the host is Matt Kloskowski.

Tilt-shift lenses are most popular for architectural photography because it helps to correct the leaning effect we see in photos of tall objects like buildings and walls. Photographer and educator Matt Kloskowski gives some tips on architectural and landscape use of Canon tilt-shift lenses.

Samyang Working On Another AE Lens And Will Cut Stock For Other Brand Names

DicaHub (translated) has more information about Samyang’s upcoming plans. After yesterday’s announcement of a 35mm f/1.4 lens with automatic exposure for Canon mount (among other lenses), the big question is if Samyang will make more lenses with AE contacts.

According to DicaHub’s interview with Samyang, the Korean lens manufacturer is working on another lens with AE contacts. Most probably for Canon mount (but that’s not clearly stated in the interview). The rumors point to a 85mm f/1.4 AE lens. No hints about when  Samyang may announce the next AE lens.

There is another interesting thing that comes out of the interview. When asked about the many names Samyang uses to brand their lenses, they answered that they recognise the issue and plan to gradually cut stock availability for the other brand names. With one exception: Rokinon. It appears that Rokinon is a major brand name for Samyang, and hence will remain for the time being. Sounds logic to me. Samyang lenses are available with the following brand names: , , , , , , .
