Another competitor is entering the 24-70mm game for full-frame DSLRs. The Tokina AT-X PRO 24–70 mm f/2.8 SD (IF) FX was seen on display at CP+. The lens is rumored to be announced at Photokina later this year.

It’s getting crowded in the 24-70mm offerings. Besides Canon’s own EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM [shoplink 2160](price & specs)[/shoplink] and EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM [shoplink 8251](price & specs)[/shoplink], there are also the Tamron AF 24-70mm f/2.8 VC [shoplink 12435](price & specs)[/shoplink] and the also rumored Sigma 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM (expected to be announced during 2014) not to mention the highly popular Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM [shoplink 230](price & specs)[/shoplink] and the new, outstanding Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM [shoplink 17019](price & specs)[/shoplink], which is defined as the new reference standard for professionals by DxOMark.

Tamron 150-600mm f5-6.3 Di VC USD Review by DxOMark

Tamron 150-600mm

DxOMark tested the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens, Tamron latest image-stabilized ultra-zoom. Tamron made a lens that sells for $1069 (Adorama | B&H Photo) and offers a lot of bang for the money. Good sharpness, a great telephoto range, and accurate and quick auto-focus are among the highlights of this lens.

DxOMark reviewed the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD using a Canon EOS 5D Mark III [shoplink 2431](price & specs)[/shoplink] and an EOS 7D [shoplink 337](price & specs)[/shoplink]. In the conclusion they write:

If Tamron built this lens to outperform the Sigma offering then they succeeded with full frame cameras. The gain in performance over their rival’s offering is less noticeable on the APS-C cameras. Despite that, the image quality is a slight improvement over the Sigma. Given the longer range and similar price, it’s a pretty impressive achievement.

The Tamron even outperforms the pricier Canon lens on the full frame Canon EOS 5D Mk III though it’s less convincing when compared with the Canon EOS 7D. There’s likely too little in it to switch but for first-time buyers the new Tamron is attractive proposition.
