Canon EOS 70D Dual Pixel CMOS Auto-Focus Test Videos and Samples (dpreview and others)

A short video by dpreview where they test and show the Dual Pixel CMOS AF of Canon’s new EOS 70D. About the Canon EOS 70D they say:

It’s become increasingly rare for any manufacturer to show us technology that’s genuinely innovative and unique, but that’s exactly what Canon has done with the EOS 70D and its ‘Dual Pixel CMOS AF’ sensor.

dpreview added a “user experience” section to their preview, be sure to check it out: there are more videos and impressions. Original video files can be downloaded.

Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x Review (camerastuffreview)

Canerastuffreview reviewed the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L  IS 1.4x lens and once more the outstanding properties of this not so cheap lens are confirmed. They conclude:

The Canon 200-400 mm performed in our test with the highest image quality we have come across for a Canon zoom lens, with and without the 1.4x converter. Flare and ghosts are incredibly well suppressed and in terms of resolution, the camera is likely to be the limiting factor. Professional sports, action, or nature photographers will quickly be convinced of the qualities of the Canon 200-400 mm f/4 with built-in 1.4x converter. Compared to lenses with a fixed focal length, the zoom range of 200 mm to 400 mm zoom delivers an excellent opportunity to frame precisely, while the picture quality remains high.
The sensational built-in converter prevents the laborious procedure of inserting a converter between a camera more than a kilo and a lens of more than 3 kilos. It prevents the frustration of missing just the right shot, because you were inserting a converter between the lens and the camera. The fact that under damp and dusty conditions you need to change the lens as little as possible is also important in order to maintain the highest image quality.

There is much more in the review, as sharpness comparison at different focal lengths, analysis of distortion, vignetting, resolution, center sharpness vs corner sharpness etc.

Lens specs:

  • High-Performance Telephoto Zoom Lens
  • Canon EF Mount
  • Aperture Range f/4-32
  • Built-in 1.4x Extender
  • Three-Mode Optical Image Stabilization
  • Ring USM Autofocus & Internal Focusing System
  • Power Focus Mode for Smooth Focus Shift
  • One Fluorite and Four UD Lens Elements
  • Fluorine Front & Rear Lens Coating

Rumor: A New Canon EOS M Before X-Mas?

EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Review

Some new tidbits about the successor of the Canon EOS M. New murmurings surfacing on the Web suggest that Canon may release a new EOS M camera before Christmas, though there is still uncertainty about the announcement date. The camera to be released before Christmas would be one of the two new EOS M cameras Canon is supposed to have in work. Of the two cameras one will be a higher end EOS M, the other similar to the current EOS M camera. Moreover, there should be two new EF-M lenses, a telephoto and a macro.

There is still the weird fact that the amazing EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens appears  to be not sold in the US, which may suggest that Canon is not sure if the EOS M system is suited for the global market.

Canon EOS M kits are still available on fire sale at Amazon (click here) and B&H (click here).

More Canon Medium Format Tidbits

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

More Canon medium format tidbits, take them with a grain of salt. It appears Canon is working to have a medium format system and that they will not announce the camera before the system is developed enough to come with lenses and more. That’s to say Canon will develop lenses for a new mount system (a larger EF mount) – the new mount could be named EF-L and an adapter for the EF mount could also be on the way.

The Canon medium format camera could be announced at Photokina 2014.
