  • Canon PowerShot A2600 Review – ephotozine (sample pics, lab shots, etc)

    • For those in the market for a budget compact camera, the Canon PowerShot A2600 is going to appeal. Available for just £80, it has decent enough image quality and a well built metal body that looks stylish in any of the colours it is available in. There are a few cons; short battery life, slow continuous shooting and the lack of optical image stabilisation, but these are perfectly acceptable for this price. You can use the eco mode to ensure you get the most from the battery and beginners to photography will find the help menu useful.

  • Scratching the Color Filter Array Layer Off a DSLR Sensor for Sharper B&W Photos – PetaPixel

    • In October 2012, astrophotographer Raymond Collecutt of Whangarei, New Zealand shared a new (and risky) idea he was playing around with: converting a standard DSLR into a sharper monochrome camera for photographing space.
After removing the glass layer that’s covering the sensor of his Canon 1000D (“It pops off slowly with a small screwdriver,” he says), Collecutt started scratching the green layer from the surface of his sensor using a soft point. This layer is the color filter array (CFA) that helps capture color information. It’s a layer that’s directly on the surface of the sensor (unlike the infrared filter, which sits above the sensor).

Videoreview: Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM vs Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD

A comparison between the [shoplink 2160]Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM[/shoplink] and the [shoplink 5013]Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD[/shoplink]. The former a $2300 lens, the latter a $1300 lens. Both definitely worth to be compared. Matthew Gore (from lightandmatter) examines the differances betwen the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC USD and the or the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II USM in this well made 14 minutes video. He concludes that the Canon is a bit sharper, on the other hand the Tamron has image stabilization. Gore’s description:

Curious whether the Tamron or the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 is right for you? This comparison might help. I take a look at the image quality of the lenses, including a look at the chromatic aberrations, and the sound and speed of the focusing motors.

Canon Stepping Into Medium Format to Grow?

Rumors have word that Canon may step into medium format to expand their offering. The shrinking sales figures for compact camera may the motivation. It appears Canon might have invested concretely in a major European manufacturer for medium format digital cameras – rumors are mentioning Phase One. Canon stepping into medium format could open interesting scenarios for the future. However, take this rumor with a grain of salt.
