Canon patent for EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6L USM lens

canon patentCanon filed a patent for a EF 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6 optical formula that seems to be for an “L” lens (if I got the machine translated description right).

This is the second patent for a superzoom lens, after a crazy patent for a EF 40-800mm F4.5-5.6 lens. Hard to say if this patents will ever hit the market. Good to know Canon is working on such ideas.

Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM Review (wonderful image quality)

Ef-m 28mm F/3.5 Is Stm Macro

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott published his exhaustive review of the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM, Canon’s latest addition to the EOS M lens ecosystem. And according to the reviewer, this tiny lens has a “wonderful image quality”.

From the conclusion:

[…] the nearly perfect “normal” angle of view provided by this lens makes it a very versatile lens than what a lens with a longer focal length would have. I found it a very versatile travel option that really delivered a lot of stunningly good images in a tiny package. I would have liked a wider aperture, but realize that having one would have compromised the compact nature of the lens…which is a delight. That being said, my one optical complaint is that I feel trying to create a shallow depth of field for non-macro shots is limited with the 28mm Macro. The inclusion of the “Macro Lites” and Super Macro mode are better than gimmicks and I think will prove genuinely useful when used in the right way. I do wish the engineers had put in a stronger detent at the normal shooting spot so that I don’t always end up in Super Macro mode! The IS system works well, the lens focuses reasonably quickly, and has no real optical flaws. All in all, this is an excellent package at a reasonable price […]

Confirmed: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will have Dual Pixel Auto-Focus

Canon Rumorscanon rumors

More and more bits about the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV flock in.

We have been told (thanks) that the EOS 5D Mark IV will have Dual Pixel AF on board. This is in all truth a feature we expected and that doesn’t come as a surprise. It also was rumored in the past.

It’s two weeks to the announcement and we still know very little about the specifications of the EOS 5D Mark IV. An alleged, pretty blurry picture of what could be the EOS 5D Mark IV surfaced yesterday (update: it’s a fake).

I listed what we can expect to be announced by Canon on August 25/26 in the post below.

What to expect to be announced by Canon before Photokina 2016 (EOS 5D Mark IV and more)

As I said, there are still no reliable information about the specifications of the EOS 5D Mark IV. For the time being the list below (posted by this site) is making its rounds (I added DPAF to the list).

  • 30mp
  • 7 fps
  • Compact Flash/SD Card Slots (No CFast)
  • Built-in Wifi
  • Dual Pixel Auto-Focus
  • 24/30fps @ 4K

  • A lot more touchscreen functionality than the EOS-1D X Mark II
  • Other ergonomic changes, such as a new “locking switch” on the rear of the camera.

New Canon EOS 5D Mark IV resolution speculation (and poll) [CW3] – Updated with link to image

EOS 5D Mark IV

Canon Rumors

Update #2: I am pretty sure the image linked below is a fake.

Update: an alleged, blurry image of the EOS 5D Mark IV showed up at DPReview forum.

Are these some of the EOS 5D Mark IV specifications? May be, and also not.

As you can see in the list below, 30MP is now the new rumored resolution of the EOS 5D Mark IV imaging sensor. These specs have been posted on a site that until recently had always pushed 24MP as the resolution-to-be of the EOS 5D Mark IV. On the other hand, I have always been told that the EOS 5D Mark IV will come with 28MP.

Since the 24MP rumor has been abandoned, it’s appears to be a bet between 28MP and 30MP. Given Canon’s recent secrecy I wouldn’t be surprised if neither of us got it right. Moreover, it seems there are no longer any doubts that the EOS 5D Mark IV will have 4K on board, something we leaked first (2 years ago).

  • 30mp
  • Compact Flash/SD Card Slots (No CFast)
  • 24/30fps @ 4K
  • 60fps @ 1080
  • 120fps @ 720
  • USB 3
  • Cable release port moved to the front of the camera where the “Mark XX” badge was.
  • A lot more touchscreen functionality than the EOS-1D X Mark II
  • Other ergonomic changes, such as a new “locking switch” on the rear of the camera.

In any case, 30MP are in the realm of possible. Stay tuned for more, it’s something over 2 weeks until the announcement. All EOS 5D Mark IV rumors are here.

Stay tuned…
