Adobe Lightroom 6.5.1 and Camera Raw 9.5.1 updates released

Adobe released Adobe Lightroom 6.5.1/CC 2015.5.1 and Camera Raw 9.5.1 to the public. Bug fixes and new cameras added (no Canons). To update please select Help > Updates to install the update, or go for the direct download links:  Win | Mac. Adobe Camera Raw 9.5.1 can be downloaded here.

Lightroom CC 2015.5.1 and Lightroom 6.5.1 are now available.  Our focus with this release was to add support for new cameras and also fix reported customer issues.

Please note that on first launch of Lightroom CC 2015.5.1 / 6.5.1, you will need to log in to continue syncing images and metadata between desktop and your mobile devices.  To sign in, click on the Activity Center in the upper-left corner and select the “Sign In” button. Known Issue

  • Image flickers when moving an adjustment slider.  Note that this only occurs when using certain AMD graphics cards (such as 6450M and 6970M) on Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan). We are working with our partners to resolve this issue. In the meantime, you can workaround this issue by disabling “Use Graphics Processor” in Lightroom’s preferences.

Canon forced to halt production of some products owing to the impact of Japan earthquakes

In a statement issued to Amateur Photographer, Canon says that while there have been no injuries among Canon employees, the recent earthquakes in Japan had an impact on the production chain due to the damages experienced by companies that supply parts. Quoting:

Canon makes clear that it has been forced to halt production of some products owing to the impact of the earthquakes on companies that supply parts, and the effect on infrastructure.

However, the statement emphasises that there have been no serious injuries to Canon employees or their families, and no significant damage to the company’s building or facilities.

Canon adds that the current impact on the company’s business is ‘minimal’, though the future situation is still being assessed.

Canon made a donation of 10 million yen (approx. $92,600) to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott posted a comprehensive video review (12 minutes) about one of Canon’s newer pancake lenses for APS-C DSLRs, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM. You can also check a gallery of sample pictures here. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM was tested on a Canon EOS 80D (see DPReview’s impression here). The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM delivers a lot of bang for the bucks, selling at $149.

Says Dustin Abbott:

Canon’s little EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is an incredible little weapon for your APS-C (crop sensor) arsenal.  It is less than inch long but is one of Canon’s sharpest EF-S lenses (second only to the excellent EF-S 60mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro lens).  Highly portable, fast and accurately focusing, and with a reasonable price tag.  This lens is pretty much a no-brainer if you are a Canon crop sensor shooter. Read the review…

Photographic authority DPReview posted their exhaustive review of Canon’s new mid-level, enthusiast-oriented EOS 80D. As seen before, Canon developed a new sensor tech with much better dynamic range than previous sensors. In fact, DPReview states that the EOS 80D has the best raw dynamic range of any APS-C Canon camera.

From the conclusion:

As an upgrade from the 70D, there’s a lot to like about the 80D, but possibly not enough to warrant trading up, unless you’re interested in video. however if you’re considering upgrading from a Rebel camera, the 80D is an excellent and natural progression in Canon’s DSLR family. And if you’re considering the 80D against the 7D Mark II, the choice is less clear and mostly boils down to what you value more, a better AF system and AF ergonomics (in the 7D Mark II), or better dynamic range,  an articulating touchscreen, and that impressive Dual Pixel AF system.
