TOKYO, September 2, 2015—Canon Inc. announced today that the Company is developing a high-sensitivity network camera equipped with a fast high-magnification lens capable of long-range color image capture even at night, making possible the viewing of subjects that the naked eye would have trouble discerning.

Amid ever-increasing safety and security concerns, a growing need for advances in surveillance systems has fueled demand for high-performance network cameras capable of clearly recording visual data night and day for such applications as urban surveillance and the monitoring of important infrastructure facilities.

From the conclusion:

The Canon PowerShot G3 X delivers high quality images across an impressive range of ISO speeds. With an excellent 24-600mm lens, the G3X offers a focal length range that its direct competitors can’t match at this time. The large touchscreen display is sharp and is an acceptable alternative to a viewfinder in many, but not all, situations. The G3X does many things well and has a lot to offer, but it is not without its drawbacks. The G3X’s autofocus performance excels in good conditions but disappoints in lower light. Despite having an excellent focal length for wildlife images, the slow continuous RAW shooting and less than impressive continuous autofocus hampers the G3X’s ability to capture action, particularly at longer focal lengths.

The review comes with sample pics, high ISO tests, and more. The G3 X is a solid performer, and this review confirms it. It’s just a bit expensive in my opinion, selling at $999.

Canon developing 4K projector that combines high brightness with compact, lightweight body

TOKYO, September 1, 2015—Canon Inc. announced today that it is developing an LCOS projector capable of displaying 5,000 lumen video and still images at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,400 pixels, a level of definition that surpasses the 4,096 x 2,160 pixel-resolution of 4K digital cinema.

Tracing its beginnings to the movie industry, 4K-resolution content has been gaining traction in the broadcasting industry. Amid ongoing advances in image quality and definition made possible by the introduction of a growing number of 4K production tools, Canon is leveraging its proprietary optical technologies to make its entry into the 4K projector market in 2016.

Canon Europe and Getty Images have revealed a series of iconic images, shot by some of the world’s leading photographers, which represent defining moments from the past decade and bring to light the power of photography and the role it plays in helping to affect change around the world…

Known for enabling people to tell the stories that need to be told, the Canon EOS 5D series celebrates its 10th anniversary with an initiative that showcases ten amazing images that tell some of these stories. From exposing the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian army, to uncovering illegal logging of rare and endangered trees in Madagascar, the EOS 5D has been the camera of choice for many professional photographers over the past decade and has captured some of the world’s most significant and important moments.

To view all the images and the amazing stories behind them, visit Canon’s Showcase within the Come and See website. The images will also be available to view as part of a special anniversary exhibition within Canon’s space during the professional week at Visa pour l’Image 2015, the annual festival of photojournalism held in Perpignan, France, from August 31 to September 6 2015.

Want to do a photowalk at CERN? You can, and you can capture all the behind-the-scenes stuff!

Want to shoot in a super cool place? Get ready for the 2015 Global Physics Photowalk organised by CERN and seven other important physics laboratory. Deadline for applications is noon on 6 September.

Cameras at the ready! CERN is teaming up with seven other large physics laboratories for an international photo competition, the 2015 Global Physics Photowalk. On 25 and 26 September, photographers from around the world will be given the opportunity to take photographs behind the scenes at these prestigious laboratories.

At CERN, twenty photographers will be given the chance to take part in the competition, which will take place on 25 September. For the occasion, CERN will be opening the doors to three of its facilities: the new Linac 4 accelerator, which will shortly start supplying beams to the Large Hadron Collider; CERN’s main workshop, where state-of-the-art technologies can be seen in use; and ISOLDE, which supplies beams to around fifty experiments each year. The photographers will also have the opportunity to take shots of everyday life on the CERN campus.

The best photos will be chosen by a local jury and exhibited in 2016. Each laboratory will also choose three photos to be entered for the international competition, which will run until the end of the year. In this case, the winning photos will be selected by a jury and a public vote. They will be exhibited in Asia, Europe and North America and will also be featured in the CERN Courier and Symmetry.
