Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Review (Photozone)

EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

The new Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM already got Photozone’s attention.

And once more the very good performance of this inexpensive lens are stated. The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM sells for $299 and is in stock at Adorama and B&H Photo.

In the conclusion, Photozone writes:

The mirrorless gang may have all the attention at the moment. However, Canon showed once more that the quality crown still belongs to DSLR systems – even and especially regarding low cost lenses. The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM may be very slow but it is darn sharp in the relevant aperture range. In fact it is every bit as good as the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM here … at half the price! The amount of lateral CAs is well controlled. In critical scenes (e.g. architecture) you will be able to spot some barrel distortions at 10mm but we’ve seen a lot worse here. The only significant weakness is vignetting especially at 10mm.

Yeah, Canon once more showed what they can do with this lens.

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM In Stock (and a review)

EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM

Both B&H Photo and Adorama have the new Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM in stock and ready to ship for $299 (Adorama | B&H Photo). Adorama also has the lens with some basic accessories (UV filter, cleaning Kit, cap leash), and still for $299 (click here).

Camerastuffreview reviewed the EF-S 10-18mm IS STM lens and found it to deliver a lot of bang for the money. Very good image quality, light weighted, image stabilisation and a silent stepper motor for AF – and all for a reasonable price. In the conclusion they write:

Canon has surprised many with the introduction of the Canon 10-18 mm. This wide-angle zoom for starting photographers will also appeal to many amateur photographers. It is a perfect complement to the 18-55 mm kit lens: compact, light, equipped with good image stabilization and very attractively priced. Just as with much more expensive wide-angle lenses, there is, especially at the shortest focal length, visible chromatic aberration, vignetting and distortion. These lens properties are easy to correct. At the time of the test, there were no lens profiles available, but after the next update of EOS Utility, Lightroom or Photoshop, that will be easy to correct with software. The image quality – even without lens corrections –  is very good, compared to much more expensive wide angle lenses. The Canon 10-18mm offers a lot of value for money.

The review comes with samples and obviously there is much more for you to read.

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Sample Pictures Published

Blogging from Dubai International Airport while waiting for my connection :-)

Canon China published a set of sample pics shot with Canon’s new ultra wide angle lens for APS-C cameras, the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM ($299, pre-order at B&H Photo | Adorama). The EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM was announced on 5/13.

This lens has an amazingly good price, and – it may sound weird – it comes with a lens hood even if it is not an “L” lens.

New Canon Ultra Wide Lenses To Be Announced Very Soon (EF-S 10-18mm and EF 16-35mm f/4L IS)

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm (left) and EF 16-35mm (right)

Digicame-info (translated) reports that they got word from a trusted source that Canon will announce 2 new ultra wide angle lenses in the next days. The rumored lenses are the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM.

So it seems Canon is going to replace two popular lenses: the excellent EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 and the highly regarded EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, although in the latter case it is less a replacement and more an addition of a new lens to the line-up.

Both lenses will get image stabilisation, the EF-S 10-18mm gets a bit slower than the EF-S 10-22mm (will it be lighter because of the smaller aperture?), the EF 16-35mm also gets slower and gains IS. The big question here is the pricing. At least for the 16-35mm I expect a price tag somewhat shy of $2,000 (the current 16-35mm is $1700). The EF-S 10-18mm will most probably also be pricier than the current EF-S 10-22mm ($650), since it comes with IS.

If you have a Canon APS-C DSLR and the EF 16-35mm is on your radar, think again and get the amazing Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 Art, a lens  with constant f/1.8 over the zoom range and that sells for $799, and a lens that puts the competitors to shame (Zeiss included).

Stay tuned, more to come soon…
