Tamron SP 150-600mm Awarded As “Best Expert DSLR Lens” (TIPA)

Tamron SP 150-600mm

The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens was awarded by TIPA as Best Expert DSLR Lens. TIPA’s motivation:

The Tamron 150-600 mm lens, for full-frame and APS-C DSLRS (with 1.5X magnification factor) incorporates VC (Vibration Compensation, Tamron’s image stabilization technology), a fast USD (ultrasonic silent drive), and eBAND (extended bandwidth and angular dependency) coating, for flare and ghosting reduction. The lens employs 20 elements in 13 groups, with the front group containing 3 ED glass elements. The circular, 9-bladed diaphragm provides exciting bokeh effects and maintains the circular shape even at 2 stops down from maximum aperture. The included SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron uses optical data to correct any distortion, light falloff and chromatic aberrations.

The Tamron sells for $1069 (pre-order for now) and offers a lot of bang for the money. Good sharpness, a great telephoto range, and accurate and quick auto-focus are among the highlights of this lens.

Tamron SP 150-600MM F/5-6.3 Di VC USD Review (Steve’s Digicams)

Tamron SP 150-600mm

Steve’s Digicams reviewed the Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens, Tamron latest image-stabilized ultra-zoom. The Tamron sells for $1069 and offers a lot of bang for the money. Good sharpness, a great telephoto range, and accurate and quick auto-focus are among the highlights of this lens.

They list what they liked about the Tamron 150-600mm:

  • Amazing zoom range, perfect for shooting from a distance
  • Vibration Correction adds up to 4 stops of correction when shooting handheld
  • Although large, it is compact for this class of lens
  • Smooth, easy rotating rings for zoom and focus
  • Weather-sealed for shooting in all conditions
  • Affordable price tag (for a lens in this category)

From the conclusion:

Tamron’s new ultra-zoom lens, the SP 150-600MM F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, is a large and powerful zoom lens for anyone that is looking to get up close and personal with their subjects. This large lens can be used with either Full-Frame or APS-C sized image sensors, although with an APS-C sensor you are looking at 240mm-960mm (with Canon’s 1.6x crop factor). This provides excellent zoom for extreme situations, distant sport photography and it is outstanding for wildlife photography. The ability to get close to your subjects without actually getting close to them allows you to photograph them without disturbing them and their natural habits. Weather-resistant construction allows you to be out in most weather conditions with the confidence that the lens will come through with no trouble, even in high moisture or rain.

The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens can be pre-ordered at Adorama or B&H Photo. Specifications and description after the break.

Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DI VC USD Review (Photography Blog)

Tamron SP 150-600mm

After having posted a set of 40 sample pics, Photography Blog published also the review of the Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DI VC USD lens (and more sample pics). The Tamron 150-600mm offers a lot of bang for the money and can be preordered for $1069 at Adorama or B&H Photo.

Some excerpts:

  • Build quality is very good, despite Tamron traditionally offering lenses at the cheaper end of the market. The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD feels solid in your hand […]
  • The zoom ring is generously wide and has a ridged, rubberised grip band
  • The Tamron […]  benefits from a moisture-resistant construction
  • The Tamron […]  features a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) that allows near-silent auto-focusing. Importantly, this solution allows instant manual override
  • Chromatic aberrations […] are impressively well controlled with this lens
  • [bokeh:] an iris diaphragm with 9 rounded blades for a pleasing rendering of the out-of-focus highlights

From the conclusion:

The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is an excellent ultra-telephoto zoom lens, offering good image quality with smooth bokeh and sharpness, an effective built-in image stabilisation system which makes it possible to hand-hold and still get sharp results, and a price that certainly won’t break the bank. The auto-focus system is reliably fast, mostly accurate and very quiet too, and Tamron’s optic is smaller and lighter than the Canon and Nikon equivalents despite offering a bigger focal range.
