Canon EOS R5 Review (one of the best cameras on the market, DPReview)

Canon EOS R5 Review

Photographic authority DPReview posted their full Canon EOS R5 review. And they like it, it seems.

To be honest the line in the title goes “one of the best cameras on the market, so long as you have the cash and desire this level of image quality and performance“. From DPReview‘s conclusion (emphasis mine):

[the EOS R5 is] fast, has an excellent autofocus system, offers high resolution, excellent video quality with plentiful video features, and you take control over it with finely honed ergonomics.

[…] As a true photographers’ workhorse, the Canon EOS R5 gets out of your way and lets you accomplish what you need to. That could include photographing sports, action, portraits in the studio, fast-fleeting family moments, and so on, and your images will most-likely be accurately focused at 45 megapixels.

[…] In the end, is the EOS R5 the true mirrorless successor to the EOS 5D series of DSLR cameras? Yes. Absolutely. It’s not necessarily the default choice of today’s high-end mirrorless market, but if that’s a market you find yourself in, this camera is absolutely worth a close look.

The EOS R5 is highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards. Canon EOS R6 Review (solid, dependable, full-frame MILC, ePhotozine)

Canon Eos R6 Review

Here is a new Canon EOS R6 review, one of the few (so far, I hope). The EOS R6 is a great camera, at an almost affordable price.

At a glance:

  • 20mp Full-frame CMOS sensor
  • Sensor-based image stabilisation (IBIS) – works with any lens
  • 3.69m dot electronic viewfinder (EVF), 0.76x magnification
  • 3.0inch vari-angle touch-screen, 1.62m dots
  • 12 / 20fps continuous shooting (mechanical / electronic)
  • ISO100 to ISO102400, Low ISO50, High ISO204800
  • 6072 autofocus points/positions
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Face and Eye-AF tracking
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Dual SD card slots
  • 4K UHD 60/30/25/24fps
  • FullHD High-speed 120/100fps
  • HDR FullHD Video

The folks at ePhotozine posted their full Canon EOS R6 review. From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS R6 gives you a solid, dependable, full-frame mirrorless camera with all the familiar controls, and handling that feels good in the hand. You could easily pick up this camera, after using a Canon DSLR, and simply get on with using it. At the same time, you’re likely to be impressed by the rapid and reliable focus system, the improved continuous shooting speeds, and excellent image quality on offer. Noise performance is particularly impressive, with the camera retaining detail in images, even as the ISO speed increases.

The Canon EOS R6 feels like a complete and well-rounded camera. It feels extremely mature in every way we can think of. There’s no jagged edges or operational issues that spring to mind, and the camera delivers the goods when it comes to image quality, with Canon’s reliable colour reproduction. Combine that with an excellent AF system, with support for both humans and animals, and you have a camera that’s going to deliver great results time after time. In addition, you’ll be able to shoot at slower shutter speeds thanks to the in-body image stabilisation system, although you might not need to, as you can easily increase the ISO speed and still get great results.

Canon Rebel T8i Review (good all-rounder for photography)

Canon Rebel T8i Review

A rare Canon Rebel T8i review (EOS 850D in Europe), Canon’s latest entry level DSLR. In times where it seems only mirrorless matters it’s good to know there still are DSLRs.

At a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • UHD 4K24p Video, Vertical Video Support

Coming to a market segment that has become less important since the raise of mirrorless, the Rebel T8i was announced in February 2020. It’s considered an “upper entry level” camera. And it seems to be a very decent “upper entry level” DSLR.

The Canon Rebel T8i review comes from Photography Blog. And they are not very enthusiastic about the Rebel T8i, rating it “above average” with 4/5 points.

The ‘headline’ inclusion of 4K video to bring the EOS 850D up to speed (and set it apart from older rival DSLRs) is in reality extremely limited through a significant crop factor and with the loss of phase detection AF.

If video is in your sights, we’d go for a mirrorless alternative.

To set the EOS 850D apart, we feel that Canon should have majored more in the areas where a DSLR holds the upper hand over mirrorless; better battery life and a bright optical viewfinder.

The viewfinder display is a let down and the battery unit is small and its performance dips in live view mode.

Does all this make the Canon EOS 850D a bad camera? Not at all!

It’s still competitive with a 24.1 megapixel sensor, rapid and reliable dual pixel AF, a polished vari-angle touchscreen and 7fps continuous shooting.

The Canon EOS 850D is a good all-rounder for photography, if a little expensive for what you get.

Canon EOS R5 Review For Underwater Photo And Video

Canon EOS R5 Review

Canon set a new reference standard with the Canon EOS R5, overheating drama included. Here is a Canon EOS R5 review for underwater photography and video.

Coming from the folks at Bluewater Photo Store, the video below is…

[…] a full review of the Canon EOS R5 full frame, 45 megapixel mirrorless camera for underwater photo and video. The R5 has some of the best specs on the market including 45 MP still images, 8K video @ 30P with internal RAW recording, 4K video up to 120fps, 5 axis in-body image-stabilization, and more!

The staff at Bluewater Photo and the Underwater Photography Guide took the Canon EOS R5 diving in the cold waters of the Puget Sound, Washington to put it to the test and see just what it could do. We’ve been very impressed with the underwater footage that we captured. However, we do think that the marketing by Canon for the R5 should have been done differently – this is a spectacular still camera with amazing video features, but it should not be relied on for the video features that were initially marketed.

Well, at least underwater the heating issue should be under control ;-)

The EOS R5 seems to be highly regarded as a stills camera. In particular, the EOS R5 autofocus system seems to be huge leap forwards.
