Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS for EOS R Review (optically above DSLR variant, Photography Blog)

Canon RF 24-105mm F/4L IS Review Canon EOS R

Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS at a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/22
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Nano USM AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Photography Blog posted a comprehensive review of the new Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens for EOS R system.

The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS appears to be another optical masterpiece by Canon.

From the conclusion:

The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS is an excellent standard zoom lens that optically is a step above the equivalent DSLR variant, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II, which incidentally is one of Canon’s most popular lenses.

The RF 24-105mm offers a very versatile focal range whilst being tack-sharp from 24mm to 85mm, both in the centre and at the edges of the frame. Sharpness at the far end of the telephoto range isn’t quite as good when shooting wide-open at f/4, but you only have to stop down to f/5.6 to get more than acceptable results. Overall the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS delivers excellent sharpness across the frame at most apertures. Vignetting at wide-open apertures and some barrel distortion at 24mm are the only other real optical issues of note.

Build quality is excellent, certainly up to the usual L-lens standard, with the built-in weather-proofing offering peace of mind in more inclement conditions.

Canon EOS R In-Depth Review by Photography Blog (and it starts shipping tomorrow)

Canon Eos R Firmware

Photography Blog posted their in-depth Canon EOS R review, complete with full-size sample images (JPG and raw, downloadable), videos and more information. The review is not without criticism.

Excerpts from the conclusion:

[…] the lack of IBIS on the Canon EOS R puts it at a distinct disadvantage, as does the rather curtailed 4K video mode and questionable design decisions, including the lack of an AF joystick, single card slot, curious M-Fn bar and lack of a shooting mode dial.

The new RF lenses are the real star of the show, especially the 50mm f/1.2 and 24-70mm f/2. They may be big, but they’re also fast, faster than any of their rivals, DSLR or otherwise. And they also show where Canon wants to take its new mirrorless system, aiming for quality at the expense of compactness.

Ultimately the Canon EOS R isn’t as DSLR-like as the Nikon Z7 and isn’t as well-specced as the Sony A7 III, but it’s definitely good enough to satisfy current Canon owners and newbies alike, and therefore to stem the recent flow of Canon’s prosumer base to Sony. Read the review…

We have serious hints that the next model in the EOS R series will sport a high resolution sensor. An interview with Canon execs also points in this direction.

The Canon EOS R Is The First Model Of A Whole Range, Canon Execs state (high res model coming)

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

French site Lens Numériques had an interview with Mr. Mineo Uchida, Mr. Masato Seita and Mr. Shingo Hayakawa, the people in charge of the development of the Canon EOS R.

The interview touched many points, not last the L-Alliance. However, there is one point in the interview where Canon’s execs clearly let you understand that a more pro-oriented model is on their schedule.

Please note the excerpts below have been machine translated from French (emphasis mine).

Question: You have favored high-quality and expensive optics with the 50mm f/1.2 and the 28-70mm f/2, but are they really suitable for use on a midrange EOS R between 6D Mark II and the 5D Mark IV?

Answer by Mr. Seita: You know, the EOS R is just the first case in a new range and we wanted to show the range of possibilities of our new mount with light optics, fast optics equipped with our new Nano technique USM with the 24-105mm f/4 and more affordable optics like the […] 35mm f/1.8 stabilized macro.

Our interpretation of the answer is that Canon is making RF mount lenses that are already designed for a higher resolution EOS R model. Last week we got a rumor about such a model, and this statement seems to confirm the rumor.

When asked about IBIS (In Camera Image Stabilisation), the reason for one card slot and cropped 4K video, Mr. Seita said:

Yes, we are aware that mechanical stabilization is an important demand from the users, but considering the positioning of the EOS R, we decided not to integrate the IBIS […] because our priority was compactness. The compactness we wanted to have was not compatible with such a system. But of course, in the future, we will be able to answer them. This is our first model. We still have room for improvement. For the memory location, it is a question of compactness and priority for the photographers covered by the EOS R. We believe that one location is enough. And for the video, it’s the same answer. We believe that the intended target will be satisfied with the proposed modes.

Canon EOS R First Impression Review (DPReview)

DPReview posted their first impression review about the Canon EOS R. They appear to have some mixed feelings, especially when it comes to the M-Fn bar. With all due respect, to me it seems every time Canon releases a new technology people feels obliged to criticise beyond necessity, just because it’s Canon. It was the same when Canon released the first EOS M camera. The amount of bad press was astonishing. Never the less, the EOS M system was well accepted by the public and it doesn’t look as if Canon didn’t sell a boatload of EOS M cameras. The EOS M50 is the best selling mirrorless camera in Japan.

The reviewer writes:

When I picked up the EOS R for the first time, I was struck by how solid it feels and how comfortable the grip is. The viewfinder looks excellent, the camera feels responsive, and I found some comfort in the familiarity of the M-Fn, AEL and AF-point selection buttons as well as the touch interface.

[…]

Then I set about actually using the EOS R, and working with its revamped controls. Feelings of excitement quickly turned to frustration. But I resolved to give myself time to work with the camera, find my way around it, customize it a bit. After a few weeks, I confess the frustration has given way to grudging acceptance. I continue to have gripes with general button and dial placement, but have found some reasonably painless ways to get at most of the functions I want quickly and easily. Read the review…
