The Next Canon EOS R Will Be A High Resolution Model

We have been told that the next Canon EOS R system camera to be announced will sport a high resolution sensor.

This makes sense. Nikon announced two full frame mirrorless cameras, the Z6 and Z7. The Nikon Z7 is the high resolution model, featuring a 45MP sensor. It’s to expect Canon will follow the same path. The Canon EOS R has a 30MP sensor (the Nikon Z6 has 24,5MP).

A Canon EOS R model with a sensor around 50MP has to be considered plausible..

This rumor doesn’t come entirely as a surprise. A more pro-oriented EOS R model is rumored since a while, and it seems just straight that Canon might feature a sensor with a resolution similar to the EOS 5Ds. In this way Canon could replicate their highly successful EOS 5D line-up with mirrorless technology. Moreover, all the Canon RF lenses appear to have been build with a 50MP sensor in mind.

It’s still unclear when the next Canon EOS R is going to be announced. Ahead of Photokina 2019 (May 2019) seems to be a good candidate announcement.

The Nisi 75mm f/0,95 Lens Is For Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras, Canon EOS R Included

Nisi will launch a new 75mm f/0,95 lens in 2019. The Nisi 75mm f/0.95 will be available for Canon EOS R, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts.

Phillip Reeve tested the Nisi 75mm f/0.95. He says:

The lens is quite big and heavy as is to be expected from one with these parameters. It is a short flange/mirrorless design and will be available for several mounts […]. The prototype we saw is native E-mount and the lens covers the full frame sensor area.

Of course we weren’t able to fully evaluate the cine lenses by spending a bit of time with them at Photokina, but handling and build quality both left a good impression, the focus and aperture rings had a really nice resistance.
The emphasize of the optical design is meant to be on bokeh rendering and indeed I would describe it as very smooth. Contrast and sharpness were more than sufficient as well.

So far we have no clues about the price and the availability.

Professional photographer Richard Bernabe had the chance to spend some time with the new Canon EOS R. And while having the EOS R in his hand he happened to be in Havana, Cuba’s capital city.

About the Canon EOS R he says:

I found the camera to be very intuitive to use, especially if you are a Canon shooter already, it fit my hands comfortably, and the image quality was very similar to that found in the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, which is my current go-to camera body for travel and landscape photography, as well as the occasional wildlife shoot. I thought the ISO performance on the new mirrorless camera to be just a tad better than the 5D Mark IV […] but it could be my imagination. It’s certainly a subjective observation at best. The two RF lenses – the Canon Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM and RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM were amazing performers – some of the sharpest Canon lenses I’ve ever used.

Is The Next, Higher Tier Canon EOS R Coming in Q1 2019? [CW2]

Rumor has it that Canon might announce a “full-blown” EOS R camera around February 2019, ahead of Photokina 2019.

We recommend you take it with a huge grain of salt. While entirely possible, we have some doubts and didn’t get any hint let alone a confirmation from our sources.

There are no specifications at this point and we also have a bit of a hard time to figure out what a “full-blown” EOS R might be. Something on EOS-1D X Mark II level?

What we know is that Canon is set to announce three new RF lenses in 2019.

As soon as the Canon EOS R was official, the Internet started to do what it likes most: complaining. Besides the ominous “2 card slot” polemics, there was another, maybe more interesting point to debate: why does the Canon EOS R not have In Camera Image Stabilisation (IBIS)?

The Nikon Z6/Z7 has it, Sony’s MILCs have it, the new medium format Fuji MILCs have it. So why not the Canon EOS R?

The people at Digital Camera World went straight to Canon UK’s product intelligence consultant, David Parry, to ask it. Here are some excerpts:

We [i.e. Canon, editor’s note] feel that in-lens IS is the optimum system for image stabilisation […]

With an in-body IS system you are creating something that needs to work over lots of different types of lenses and different lens groups, so you don’t get a dedicated system for that particular lens.

All lenses move in different ways, and you get different types of shake depending on what kind of lens you’re using, so dedicating the IS system to the particular lens is, for us, the optimum way of doing it – but that’s not to say that we aren’t looking at in-body IS.

Makes sense to me. Furthermore, Canon is very conservative when it comes to new features. My interpretation of what Mr. Parry said is that Canon might testing IBIS and that it may find its way in a future mirrorless camera.

There will be no Canon EOS R with an APS-C sensor

I don’t know who originated this rumor but unfortunately it’s making its rounds on the web.

It’s suggested that Canon might have an EOS R model with APS-C sensor on their agenda. This is utterly and outmost something that will not happen. We got this confirmed from our sources.

Canon’s mirrorless line-up with APS-C sensor is the EOS M system. Although you may object that there are still few lenses (but a new EF-M 32mm f/1.4 has just been announced), this is the mirrorless system Canon designed for APS-C sensors and it is the system Canon will invest into and expand in the years to come. The replacements for the Canon EOS M5 and the EOS M6 are expected to be announced next year.

Unfortunately anything related to the Canon EOS R gets you a lot of traffic and so it comes that such rumors get born and spread. Unfortunately, this rumor will not disappear easily or anytime soon.
