What will Canon release in 2024, what can we expect?

A new rumor suggests what Canon might have on their radar for 2024.

  • Canon EOS R5 Mark II might be released within the next months, say around April 2024, and it will be announced before the Canon EOS R1
  • A development announcement of the Canon EOS R1 might happen at the same time as the EOS R5 Mark II announcement
  • Still at the same time, Canon might announce the RF 28mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 and the Canon RF 35mm f/1.2L
  • The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Z might be announced around July 2024, might have internal zoom and “power zoom” functionality
  • Both the C300 and C500 series of cameras might get an update before IBC in September 2024

Some of the gear in the list above is rumored since long, since years, indeed. The EOS R1 was rumored sine the EOS R system came into existence, and the same can be said for the RF 35mm f/1.2L. This is gear that Canon will (or might) announce sooner or later, so the rumors will end to be reliable, sooner or later.

Forget rumors, go out and snap pics.

Canon EOS R1 And EOS R5 Mark II Now Rumored Not To Have A Global Shutter

It’s always funny when rumor sites discredit their own rumors. What a fancy game!

The same sites which previously claimed the not yet released Canon EOS R1 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II might have a global shutter, are now stating that an ” extremely reliable source” told them they will not have a global shutter. Guess there will be enough time before announcement to switch back to “might have a gobal shutter” for one last time. Just to make people curious, of course:

It was suggested that readout speeds will be good enough to make the advantages of a global shutter less prominent, while maintaining the expected image quality in the next generation prosumer and flagship camera bodies. The same source claims that Canon’s next image sensors will have bigger advancements in performance than we’re used to from a new generation of Canon consumer sensors.

Don’t waste your time with rumors, go out snapping pics instead.

Canon EOS R1 Undergoing Final Tests And Ready To Be Announced?

And here is the latest Canon EOS R1 rumor, one of the longest running rumors. A rumor that started the day after the first EOS R was announced. Will it eventually become real?

Latest has it that Canon has put the Canon EOS R1 into the hands of selected photographers for test purposes. Says the source of the rumor:

[…] expect “some kind” of announcement in Q1 of 2024. If you recall, Canon first gave a development announcement for the EOS R3 and put it in the hands of professional photographers for the Tokyo Olympics before an official announcement.

[…] prototypes of the EOS R1 are in the hands of the usual professional photographers as Canon readies the launch of the flagship.

[…] we have been told that Canon has “impressively” improved iris tracking AF point selection.

[…] Quad Pixel AF is not ready and will not be featured in the Canon EOS R1 image sensor.

Not much, to be honest. Not sure if the announcement in Q1 2024 is to be taken seriously. Until the usual few Japanese sites report about, it is better to take it with a grain of salt.

Stay tuned.

Latest rumor has it that Canon might be set to release more cameras featuring a stacked sensor.

Stacked sensor was first introduced with the Canon EOS R3. The source of the rumor claims that Canon will release three new cameras with a stacked sensor. One might be the fabled EOS R1, another one might be the EOS R5 Mark II. Don’t get too excited, though.

The rumor doesn’t come with any consolidating argument nor with a timeline or release date. It’s all very speculative and we recommend you take it with a grain of salt. if ever, these sensors will be seen in 2024.

Stay tuned.
