Canon EOS R50 Review (reasonable amount of quality features)

Canon EOS R50 Review

Here is a Canon EOS R50 review. The EOS R50 is one of the entry-level EOS R bodies and features an APS-C imaging sensor.

Canon EOS R50 at a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC X Image Processor
  • UHD 4K 30p Video Recording
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 651 Zones
  • 2.36m-Dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • 15 fps Electronic Shutter
  • Movie for Close-Up Demos Mode
  • Vertical Movie Mode
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

Dustin Abbott posted his comprehensive EOS R50 review. From hos conclusion:

[given the price] the Canon EOS R50 will almost certainly sell well for Canon because it offers a reasonable amount of quality features for the very low price point. The only cheaper APS-C mirrorless camera is the Canon R100, and that camera comes without the articulating LCD screen and has an older focus system.

You’ll want to either have relatively small hands or else a strong desire for a compact camera, but, if that’s the case, you’ll enjoy having a decent viewfinder and an excellent touchscreen in such a compact camera. The autofocus system is very robust for this class of camera, which definitely ups the fun factor.

The biggest reason to hesitate on purchasing the Canon EOS R50 is the utter lack of native lenses available for it. Canon needs to demonstrate that they are going to support the RF-S mount in a way far better than their failure to support the EF-M mount. The current state of the EOS R system is that I really like and enjoying using many of the cameras, but I’m frustrated by the policies regarding lenses.

Canon EOS R50 Review (bang for bucks, lacks native lenses)

Canon Eos R50 Review

Here is a Canon EOS R50 review. The EOS R50 is one of the more affordable cameras in the EOS R lineup, and comes with an APS-C imaging sensor.

At a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC X Image Processor
  • UHD 4K 30p Video Recording
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 651 Points
  • 2.36m-Dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • 15 fps Electronic Shutter
  • Movie for Close-Up Demos Mode
  • Vertical Movie Mode

DPReview posted their full Canon EOS R50 review. They gave the EOS R50 a “Silver Award” and a scoring of 84/100. From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS R50 is a very capable mirrorless camera, especially when you take its $799 (with lens) price into account. It delivers in nearly all areas, most importantly photo quality and autofocus. Full-width 4K video with 10-bit HDR are big pluses, as well. The R50 is not without its flaws, however. Its controls are tight, the kit lens so-so, and 4K video suffers from noticeable rolling shutter.

While the R50 is easy to hold, with a surprisingly large grip, its rear controls are very tight, which led to many accidental button presses in our experience. The EVF is on the small side, but there’s just no room for a larger one.

One of the major issues with Canon’s APS-C RF-mount cameras at the moment is a lack of available lenses. As of September 2023, there were just three, and since Canon does not publish roadmaps, what comes next is unclear. In the meantime, you can use full-frame RF lenses, but they’re pricey, or adapt EF lenses, which can end up being bulky.

[…] in conclusion, the Canon EOS R50 offers a lot of bang for the buck, though the RF-S system has a way to go when it comes to lens selection. It’s one of the most portable mirrorless bodies out there

Canon EOS R50 Review

DPReview posted a gallery with sample pictures shot using the Canon EOS R50. Not bad image quality at all.

They say:

We’re hard at work completing our final review of Canon’s ultra-compact EOS R50 mirrorless camera. While those of us with larger fingers have found the R50’s tight controls challenging to use, the camera delivers when it comes to the most important thing: image quality. A fresh set of samples with a production camera are now available for your perusal.

Canon EOS R50 Hands-on Review (is it replacing the EOS M50?)

Canon Eos R50 Review

A Canon EOS R50 hands-on review. The Canon EOS R50 made quite the splash when it was announced.

At a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC X Image Processor
  • UHD 4K 30p Video Recording
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with 651 Zones
  • 2.36m-Dot Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.62m-Dot Vari-Angle Touchscreen
  • 15 fps Electronic Shutter
  • Movie for Close-Up Demos Mode
  • Vertical Movie Mode
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

DPReview posted their Canon EOS R50 hands-on review. They also tackle the question many are wondering about: can or does the EOS R50 replace the hugely popular Canon EOS M50 Mark II? DPReview says:

The similarities between the two cameras [EOS R50 and EOS M50 II, editor’s note] are plentiful. […] In short, they seem to be targeting the same user base of casual users, beginners and those seeking a small, simple camera.

So what does the R50 mean for the M-mount?

Canon hasn’t said anything official on what the future holds for the M-mount, but it’s been four and a half years since the last EF-M lens launch and two and a half years since the last new EOS M body. The M50 was one of Canon’s best-selling EF-M mount models and yet we haven’t seen any movement or new support to expand on the EF-M mount in years. Now, in addition to having no new news, we’ve gotten what looks like a direct upgrade/replacement of the M50 II, new and improved in every way.
