Canon EOS M50 Conclusion: The most affordable EOS mirrorless with a built-in viewfinder has plenty to offer, at Imaging Resource

Certainly, we wouldn’t hold the limitations of its 4K mode against the little EOS M50 too much, because there’s still a lot of camera here for the money. For less than US$800 street, you can get both the M50 body and a kit lens, and have yourself a very capable still shooter with good image quality out of the box, and the potential for even more from raw or C-RAW.
And you’ll also find great performance and handling in the M50’s relatively lightweight, compact body that pairs beautifully with Canon’s EF-M lenses, and can also accept the company’s many, many years of EF lenses via the optionally-available (and rather pricey) EOS M mount adapter, or more affordable third-party equivalents.

Canon Made The Rebel SL3 Incompatible With Third Party Flashes By Removing Universal Hot Shoe Pin

  • UHD 4K Video and 4K Time-Lapse Movie
  • 9-Point AF System; Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600
  • Built-In Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Canon just announced a new iteration of the world’s smallest DSLR, a camera with four different names (depending by geolocation). The Rebel SL3 aka EOS 250D aka EOS 200D Mark II aka Kiss X10.

Now, it seems Canon removed the possibility to use third party flashes with the Rebel SL3. The universal hot show shoe pin is missing on the Rebel SL3. Not only, according to Michael The Maven Canon did the same with the Rebel T7.

This sucks. Crippling an entry level DSLR to make it incompatible with inexpensive flashes like Yongnuo’s isn’t very user friendly, especially is you consider that people buying a Rebel SL3 are not pros and therefore likely on a budget. In other words: people buying the Rebel SL3 are likely to buy an inexpensive third party flash. Not cool Canon.

Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS Rebel SL3:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/25p vs 1080/60p).
  • Better video autofocus: Features on-sensor phase-detection for more confident movie autofocus.
  • Better sound: Can connect to an external microphone for higher quality sound recording.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1040k vs 921k dots).
  • More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Fewer buttons to press: Is equipped with a touch-sensitive rear screen to facilitate handling.
  • More selfie-friendly: Has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing.
  • Easier time-lapse photography: Has an intervalometer built-in for low frequency shooting.
  • More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 7 months after the D3500).

Reasons to prefer the Nikon D3500:

  • Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor’s full resolution potential.
  • Larger viewfinder image: Features a viewfinder with a higher magnification (0.57x vs 0.54x).
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 84g or 19 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (1550 versus 1070) out of a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (28 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in August 2018).
