EOS 5D3 vs EOS C300 vs RED Scarlet at low light

How do the EOS 5D Mark III ($3,499), the EOS C300 ($15,999) and RED’s Scarlet (the pixel champion! <$10,000) compare one to the others? Good question, and over at nofilmschool they tried to answer the question. And what would be better than a bike race shot at night? Spoiler: The C300 beats them all, much better performance at low light (not really a surprise). However, given the big price difference, the EOS 5D Mark III performance is worth of consideration. Speedlite 600EX-RT Mini Review by S. Bourne

Scott Bourne posted a mini review about Canon’s flagship Speedlite, the 600EX-RT. Synthetic and concise, the review discusses its features, also compared to previous versions of Canon’s Speedlites. Quoting:

The main thing I like about this flash (other than its amazing power) is it’s ability to zoom from 20-200mm with a Canon lens and to do so automatically. This is quite an improvement over the 580EXII and if I were to buy the 600, that’s the main reason I would do so. The built-in radio control is also a big deal since it eliminates the need to buy third-party flash triggers.

Btw, the 600 EX-RT is suitable for Canon Instant Double Rebates if bought together with a 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II, EOS 60D or EOS 7D. The Instant Double Rebates apply to the mentioned camera bodies and selected lenses and/or Speedlites. Savings can go up to $250, depending by the kit you choose. The rebates last until June 2.

HOT DEAL: PowerShot G1 X, camera bag, lens cleaning kit & 4GB memory card for $729

If you live in the US, I have two good deals for you. Both shops are based in the USA and ship for free. First one comes from top rated eBay seller beachcamera: a kit that bundles the PowerShot G1 X, a camera bag, a lens cleaning kit and a 4GB memory card (>10 kits available). All for . Price is visible on check-out. Not bad if you consider that the G1 X has an official price of $799!

I found another deal, although not as good as the previous one. The PowerShot G1 X is sold for by top rated eBay seller bigvalueinc. More than 10 items available. Well, it’s still $72 below the official price. :-)

EOS 5D Mark III without light-leaking issues available at B&H (+ double instant rebates)

According to hdcamteam, this week B&H will receive a new batch of 5D Mark IIIs that do not have the light-leaking issue. So, if you were waiting for the light-leak issue to get solved, this may be the right moment to place your order (click here). Be aware that there is no official statement about batches or shipments of “new” 5D mark IIIs. However, it seems that Canon reacted to the problem and found a solution.

This is also a good occasion to check Canon’s double instant rebates on lenses (and/or speedlites), when purchased together with a EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 60D or EOS 7D (ending 06/02). On EOS 60D bodies there is an instant saving of $100, and on 7D bodies it is $150. Savings on lenses can go up to $250, depending on the kit combination (body + lenses/speedlites) you choose. More lenses and/or speedlites can be added, increasing the overall saving.  Click here to check the double instant savings on selected Canon kits. It looks a little bit complicated at first glance, but simply choose a body and a lens, and then explore all the possible combinations that are offered.

EOS 5D Mark III light-leaking patched with tape

Over at lensrentals.com they got back a light-leaking EOS 5D Mark III that was fixed by Canon. Fixed? Not really someone may think. Would be better to say “patched”, since the problem was (albeit perfectly) solved by applying some black tape under the top LCD panel. You might think that is not the most elegant solution, and maybe not the solution you could expect on a $3,500 toy, but it is perfectly working (as lensrentals points out). No more light leaking through the LCD panel.

UPDATE: German site heise.de got a confirmation by Canon that tape is used for the light-leaking problem. This is a normal procedure, and tape is widely used in cameras and lenses.
