Photography Blog reviewed the Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM lens, the “bokeh master”. Sigma has landed another winner with this lens

From the conclusion:

Weighing in at well over 1.5kg and sporting a huge 105mm front element, the Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM is a monster of a lens, but thankfully it delivers in the image quality department. Sigma have gone all out to make this the ultimate lens for bokeh lovers, and you certainly won’t be disappointed if that description fits you.

The Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM is a tack-sharp lens, both in the centre and at the edges of the frame, with little evidence of chromatic aberrations and virtually no distortion. Vignetting at wide-open apertures is the only real optical issue of note, something that similarly fast lenses also suffer from, although stopping down to f/4 solves this problem altogether.

As with other recent Sigma lenses that we’ve reviewed, the build quality of the 105mm F1.4 DG HSM is fantastic, with the brass lens mount and sober all-black design adding to the high-quality feel. Read the review at Photography Blog.

Is The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS The Best Kit Lens On The Market?

Canon RF 24-105mm F/4L IS Review Canon EOS R

Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS at a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/4 to f/22
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Nano USM AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Tony & Chelsea Northrup posted a 9 minutes review of the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS lens for the EOS R full frame camera system.

A interchangeable camera system’s appeal depends largely by the its lens ecosystem. Something Fujifilm understood early and did right, and Canon didn’t apparently are too much with their APS-C mirrorless system, the EOS M.

Canon seems to have reminded how important the lens ecosystem is for a new camera system when they introduced the EOS R. While the RF 28-70 mm F/2L and especially the RF 50mm F/1.2L are the lenses that showcase the capabilities of the new RF mount,  the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS is the kit lens for the EOS R. A pretty good kit lens it appears.

We’ve now taken over 1,600 photos with the Canon EOS R and the 24-105 f/4 lens… and it’s a pretty fantastic combination for general, do-it-all consumer photography. The RF 24-105 f4 L IS is sharper than other kit lenses we’ve tested, including the Sigma 24-105 f4 and the Canon EF 24-105 f4 L IS. It’s almost as sharp as the Canon 24-70 f/2.8, but not quite (and of course, it’s a stop slower). While it’s not a professional-grade lens, it’s well-built, fairly compact, and extremely versatile.

Well, engineering lenses is something Canon does very good.

Is 4K Video On The Canon EOS R Just Upscaled From 2K?

Eos R

This is what the folks at Camera Conspiracies claim, and they posted a video about it.

Canon faced a lot of criticism for how they implemented 4K video on the Canon EOS R. But this claim is new, and so far the first we’ve seen it.

What do you think, is this true, is the EOS R’s 4K video nothing more than upscaled 2K?

This Canon EOS R Review Claims It Is A Very Good Video Camera

Canon Eos R Price

The Canon EOS R got some bad press when it comes to video performance. Some people and sites helped a lot to this bad press.

The review posted by Imaging Resource’s Jaron Schneider does not follow the trend. On the contrary, He says the Canon EOS R is indeed a very good camera for video work. Jaron Schneider is a commercial filmmaker, so I guess he knows what he is saying.

In the conclusion he writes:

The EOS R is not the perfect camera for every situation, but it does have its place. Personally, I love it for my smaller jobs because it fits into a bag (several of them could fit in the same space a C300 would take up) and the quality of the footage is wonderful. Sure, it has problems but, when used specifically and with an understanding of its limitations, there is a lot to like about it. It’s cheaper than the 5D IV, which I actually liked using for video (you can read about that here), and as mentioned the EOS R better in every way than the 5D IV for video production.

[…] it’s not going to change the industry in any meaningful way. It’s just not that kind of a product. But it is a far, far cry from being a “bad” camera. The Canon EOS R is a very good camera with a lot of advantages that should not be overlooked. It’s not for everyone, and that’s OK. It works well for me and for those who shoot like I do.

The Fujifilm X-T3 Is The Best Stills/Video Camera On The Market, says DPReview

Fujifilm X-T3

Fujifilm X-T3 at a glance:

  • 26.1MP APS-C X-Trans BSI CMOS 4 Sensor
  • X-Processor 4 with Quad CPU
  • UHD 4K60 Video; F-Log Gamma & 10-Bit Out
  • 2.16m-Point Phase-Detection Autofocus
  • 0.75x 3.69m-Dot OLED Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Tilting LCD Touchscreen
  • Extended ISO 80-51200, 30 fps Shooting
  • Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; Sports Finder Mode
  • Weather-Sealed Magnesium-Alloy Body

Here at Canon Watch we like Fujifilm cameras a lot, and the Fujifilm X-T3 seems to be exactly what we were expecting. A great camera.

Photographic authority DPReview reviewed the Fujifilm X-T3, and they seem to be very fond of it.

From the conclusion:

The Fujifilm X-T3 is arguably the best stills/video camera on the market right now. More expensive full frame cameras will offer better still image quality and cameras with in-body image stabilization will be easier to shoot video with, but nothing offers this balance of image quality and movie capability in a single package.

Even better, the X-T3 does both things in a way that makes them enjoyable. The X-T series has already established a fan-base of photographers with its traditional, dedicated-dial interface but, while this can also be used for video, we’d recommend using the (still fiddly) Movie Silent Control mode if you’re switching back and forth, since it allows separate exposure settings for each style of shooting.

With the X-T3, you get excellent JPEGs with some of the industry’s most attractive color options, access to an extensive selection of dedicated lenses, only now with improved autofocus and class-leading video. Crucially, none of the video features get in the way of its excellence as a stills camera. Read the review here…

Fujifilm really did a lot if not everything right with their mirrorless cameras, starting with the lens ecosystem. While we prefer Canon’s color science we agree that Fujifilm’s color science is very good.

The Fujifilm X-T3 is just a really great mirrorless camera, and before wasting your money on excessively expensive full frame mirrorless systems we’d recommend you have a look to see if the Fujifilm X-T3 fulfils your needs. Most likely it does.
