The Unicorn is Back: Canon EOS 3D with 50MP Rumoured Again (2 versions)

Canon EOS 3D
18 months ago this camera was rumoured to be the EOS 3D

This is the unicorn-rumor, Canon’s fabled high megapixel camera. The rumor mills are crunching it since years. Now we have another push. Let’s hope Santa is listening.

Not just one but two of the unicorns are said to appear soon. While it has always been 46MP that were rumored, now it’s 50MP. One of the unicorns is said to come without low-pass filter (would be good for astrophotography, and for extreme sharpness fanatics). Both cameras are said to come with a form factor that’s not the same as the EOS-1 line, and to get positioned above the EOS 5D Mark III. Obviously the moniker “EOS 3D” is back in game.

Oh, almost forgot it: these cameras are expected for Q1 2015. Before it was 2014, 2013 etc. First mentions date back to 2008-2009.

CW’s take: no comment. This is a rumor that floats around since years. Every now and then it gets an update :-)

Another Mention Of Canon’s High Megapixel DSLR (EOS 3D is back)

EOS 3DEOS 3D

The Canon-high-megapixel-saga grows on a new murmuring, and the fabled moniker “EOS 3D” is back again.

Latest rumors have it that Canon will announce a DSLR named “3D” later this year. The rumor suggests it will be sort of a bigger brother to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs), and not a camera that’s part of the EOS-1 series.

Specifications of the EOS 3D are said to be “broadly similar” to the 5D Mark III, but with “much higher” resolution and 4k video. Price will be higher than the first price of the 5D Mark III. The 3D should be available late 2015.

There is a small possibility, suggested by the rumor source, that the “3D” name was just the name of a prototype undergoing testing, and that the DSLR we are discussing here could indeed be the EOS 5D Mark IV.

Beside that “3D” is a moniker that is rumored since long (and probably never will be seen in the real world), it is also worth to mention that the latest “Canon high megapixel”-rumors are somewhat contradictory. The latest information I got was about a possible 3-layers sensor. I have also been told that this camera could be announced soon. However, Canon Rumors had word that there will be no Canon DSLR announcement at NAB 2014.

Hard to say how many salt is needed here. I don’t think we will ever see a Canon DSLR named 3D, but I think it is rather plausible it could be a name given to test units. I am also pretty sure Canon is working on a high resolution DSLR.

Rumor: 6D Mark II, 5D Mark IV, Studio Camera, new EOS-1 and EOS-1s (and no 3D)

5D Mark IV

The rumor appears to originate from a high level dealer presentation in Japan. The rumor states

  • that the EOS 5D Mark IV will push specs even higher
  • that the rumored Canon “studio camera” will aim at “total image quality”
  • there will not be a 3D
  • by early 2015 there will be 4 new DSLRs: EOS 6D Mark II, EOS 5D Mark IV, a new EOS-1, and an EOS-1s – two of these camera should be announced next year
  • medium format is “still an option”

Rumor: Does Canon Have A 39.3MP Sensor Out In The Wild? (and Digic 6 tidbits)

This is another rumor concerning the fabled 3D. Canon Rumors reports that they have been

[…] told that multiple large megapixel sensors exist, and one that is sure to reach market is a 39.3mp sensor.

There was also a mention of the next image processing unit, which should be the Digic 6:

There is also a suggestion that we will see DIGIC VI processors before the larger megapixel camera(s) reach the market in late 2013 or early 2014.

Finally, it is suggested that there will be APS-C related and lens announcements/releases before the large megapixel camera(s) will be presented.

Hoax Or Real? An EOS 3D Shows Up On B&H’s Catalog, But Then Disappers

The people at Nine Volt made a search on B&H’s camera store, and they searched for the EOS 3D, and they got a result. The specs are those that were already rumored over the web. And the housing too: the rumors we reported were saying that the fabled EOS 3D may come in a EOS-1D X shaped body (like the one you see in the pictures).

Last night, in inadvertent search for a Canon 3D on B&H’s web site gave the below result. Clicking on the link gave an error page. This morning the search no longer produces the same result. Does B&H know something in advance about the 3D? Maybe an October announcement is really coming.

So, the question is if this is a well made hoax, or if it is real. Most dedicated sites believe it is a fake. I am not 100% sure. When asked by PetaPixel the people over at Nine Volt claimed it is not photo-shopped.

[Rumor] Is Canon’s High Resolution (46MP) DSLR Around The Corner? (and three new lenses too?)

CR has more hints that Canon will soon announce a new, high resolution DSLR. The talk is about a 46MP sensor.

I’m told that the coming big megapixel camera is a very new sensor design/overhaul. The emphasis is in the dynamic range of the sensor. Performance is said to be on the level of medium format, even better than the impressive D800.

The high res cam is said to get a new naming scheme (no 3D nor something with “D”). Canon should announce it at PhotoPlus in New York City in October.

There are also new lenses that are said to show up soon. The EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x is expected to be announced by Canon at PhotoPlus. Finally, two f/4 telephoto lenses are rumored to be announced in January 2013: the EF 300 f/4L IS II and the EF 400 f/4L IS.
