Canon EOS 5D Mark IV high ISO performance better than Nikon D810 and Sony a7R II

EOS 5d Mark iv

Yesterday DPReview added the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV to their Studio Scene Comparison Tool.

The folks over at Digicame-Info made a high ISO performance comparison between the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, the Nikon D810 and the Sony Alpha a7RII. Well, the EOS 5D Mark IV is clearly ahead the competition. See the picture above or try it out by yourself.  You can see the ISO performance at ISO 25600 of the EOS 5D Mark IV is clearly better than the Nikon D810 and also has an edge over the Sony a7R II.

Canon’s new sensor design (with ADC on chip) is showing its advantages. Kudos Canon!

that´s right.. but performance is good.
i cant wait for the 5DS MK2 with the better sensor design.
too bad canon has such long productcycles.
we will probably see 2 more generations of sony cameras before we see the 5DS MK2.

At this point they are all so good at sky high ISO’s that for the vast majority of shooters this should not the determining factor. I can’t see someone switching systems due to this factor.

What will be important to most users are the ergonomics, if you are already invested in a system, reliability, etc. This is where Canon has great strengths, esp. over Sony.

Dude you must have better eyes than I have… Lol

    • Arnold

      yeah well i see it.
problem is when you resample the bigger D810 and A7R II resolutions to 30MP it´s a wash….
      nevertheless.. good performance.

  • Arnold

kiddo.. it´s JPG and still shows less noise than the other cameras.
if you want to compare sensor noise you use RAW…. any noob knows that.

and who shall pay him for this post… you kidding yourself.

    • Don’t get frustrated – it’s just some pixels on a screen. Different roads sometimes lead to the same castle. You want a better example showing that it’s not a clear winner, or a winner, look at the text (RAW + JPG):

Anything to object after seeing that ?

  • Wade Marks

I agree that it’s hard to really determine a clear winner, and that this should not be what determines someone’s buying decision. And who shoots at ISO 25600 anyway? It’s like the old hifi systems, where the arguments ran as to who had the better specs at frequencies the human ear couldn’t even register.

However, this is not a paid post…this is a website for Canon enthusiasts and thus most posts will be very positive to Canon. Simple as that.

  • Refurb7

They all look great. The Canon seems to show less noise in all of the faces. The Sony & Nikon seem to show more detail in areas of fine detail.

  • Pancanikonpus

Genius use 25600 ISO shooting photo, no wonder genius is little in this world

  • hemo2

I can’t see that the 5D MK IV is better, let alone ‘clearly better’. The 5D MK IV is more underexposed, which makes me wonder if it has less dynamic range than others, but the amount of actual noise appears no better at all to me.

  • It seems to me that there’s less noise, yes but also less detail.
Apparently these RAW files aren’t as RAW as one may think, the smoothing algorythm is quite strong even in RAWs.
