Canon Patent: 85mm F1.8 Lens Using “Seagull Lenses”

canon patent

Here is a new Canon patent application for a 85mm f1.8 lens with some special optical elements.

Canon patent application 2024168979 (Japan, published 12/5/2024) discusses optical formulas for a 85mm f1.8 lens with optical elements called “seagull lenses” (that’s what the machine translation says).

From the patent literature:

  • An optical system that is small in size and has a large aperture while having high optical performance is provided.
  • Background Art: In recent years, with the increasing number of pixels in solid-state imaging elements such as CCD and CMOS sensors, optical systems used in digital still cameras and video cameras are expected to have high optical performance. In addition, large-diameter optical systems are required to take pictures that make the most of the bokeh effect. Furthermore, optical systems with a short optical length are required to reduce the size of imaging devices.
  • SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT EMBODIMENTS: It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide an optical system which has high optical performance, is small in size, and has a large aperture.

Example 1

  • Focal length: 85.00
  • F-number: 1.85
  • Half angle of view: 14.28
  • Image height: 21.64
  • Total length: 78.50
  • Back focal length: 16.65
