Canon Working On Global Shutter Sensor With Dual Memory Pixels, Research Paper

global shutter

Canon published a research paper in the Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, named “A 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory” (by Masahiro Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sekine, Takafumi Miki, Takashi Muto, Toshiki Tsuboi, Yusuke Onuki, Yasushi Matsuno, Hidekazu Takahashi, Takeshi Ichikawa, and Shunpike Inoue).

From the paper’s abstract:

[expander_maker id=”2″ more=”Click to read the article” less=”Read less”]

In this paper, we describe a newly developed 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual in-pixel charge domain memories (CDMEMs) has about 5.3 M effective pixels and achieves 19 ke− full well capacity, 30 ke−/lxcenterdots sensitivity, 2.8 e- rms temporal noise, and −83 dB parasitic light sensitivity. In particular, we describe the sensor structure for improving the sensitivity and detail of the readout procedure. Furthermore, this image sensor realizes various readout with dual CDMEMs. For example, an alternate multiple-accumulation high dynamic range readout procedure achieves 60 fps operation and over 110 dB dynamic range in one-frame operation and is suitable in particular for moving object capturing. This front-side-illuminated CIS is fabricated in a 130 nm 1P4M with light shield CMOS process.

Press release:

Skylum introduces AirMagic, AI-powered photo editing software for aerial photography

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence, AirMagic gives drone and aerial photographers an automated solution to improve their images.

BELLEVUE, WA – March 7, 2019 — Today, Skylum announced AirMagic, the world’s first fully automated AI-powered enhancer for Mac & PC, created for drone and aerial photography.

While drones let us shoot incredible images from previously unreachable places, the photos themselves often lack quality, making for a lot of manual post-processing work to fix issues like haze, low or extreme contrast, lack of sharpness, undersaturation and chromatic aberration. This tedious editing process requires time, special knowledge and expensive software.

With AirMagic, these problems are a thing of the past. AirMagic was created to automatically resolve issues inherent to aerial photography. It lets photographers process their images without major involvement — all you need to do is drop all your aerial photos into the app, and AirMagic takes care of the rest to make each photo look its best.

The Yongnuo YN450 is a Mirrorless Android Camera with 4/3 Sensor and Canon EF Mount

yongnuo yn450

We know the brand Yongnuo for their inexpensive lenses and flashes. Here is something different and rather unusual.

The Yongnuo YN450 is a camera with a 4/3 sensor and Canon EF mount, and like a smartphone it’s powered by Android.

As Cinema5D sums it up:

The Yongnuo YN450 is a smart mirrorless camera with Android operating system and a 16MP micro four thirds image sensor. It features a Canon EF mount, a 5″ multi-touch 1080p display, as well as a 4G SIM card slot for instant content sharing.
Yongnuo decided to equip their camera with the Canon EF lens mount, which might have to do with Yongnuo’s lens portfolio, which is based on Canon EF mount (and Nikon F mount). However, that mount makes the whole camera-lens combination very bulky and actually prevents one from being able to use more compact micro four thirds lenses, which would be a better match for the sensor, in my opinion.

Who need such a camera, and does it make sense?

Canon Corporate Strategy Documents, More Resources To Mirrorless, Looks At New Markets

Canon published the company’s corporate strategic documents.

From the presentation material (full doc below, see image above) it’s clear that mirrorless technology is where Canon will put most resources and energy in the next years.

There is also talk about a new businesses that “will drive future growth”. That’s commercial printing, network cameras, medical, and industrial equipment.

The documents reveal the important, strategic role the Canon EOS M50 played in Canon’s move to put a dent in the mirrorless market.

Says Fujio Mitarai, chairman and CEO:

[…] for cameras, which are mainly a consumer-oriented product, the overall market continues to shrink due to improvement in smartphone camera features. Even against this backdrop, however, we continue to see positive growth in mirrorless cameras, known for their compact and light-weight designs, thanks to improvements in performance, which is now on par with DSLRs.

Although we have been taking a cautious approach to mirrorless cameras until recently, we have begun to successively launch strategic models, and will strive to further enhance our lineup going forward as well. The overall market will continue to shrink for some time, however, we will work to support our camera business by focusing management resources on the growing market segment of mirrorless cameras.
