Canon tops among Japanese companies in U.S. patent rankings for twelve years running

TOKYO, January 12, 2017—Canon Inc. again ranked first among Japanese companies and third overall for the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2016, according to the latest ranking of preliminary patent results issued by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services.

Canon actively promotes the globalization of its business and places great value on obtaining patents overseas, carefully adhering to a patent-filing strategy that pursues patents in essential countries and regions while taking into consideration the business strategies and technology and product trends unique to each location. Among these, the United States, with its many high-tech companies and large market scale, represents a particularly important region in terms of business expansion and technology alliances.

Canon release Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.5.20 (support for new cameras, and for older models)

Canon released a new version of their photo software, Digital Photo Professional (DPP) 4.5.20. Support for new cameras, and eventually also for older camera models, has been added. This is good news, since now also owners of an EOS 5D, EOS 40D, EOS 30D etc can use DPP 4.x.

Canon has released a new update to its popular Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP4) software. Version 4.5.20 adds support for older cameras including EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS 5D, EOS 40D, EOS 30D, EOS 20Da, EOS 20D, EOS 400D DIGITAL (EOS Kiss Digital X / EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi), EOS 350D DIGITAL (EOS Kiss Digital N / EOS DIGITAL REBEL XT), PowerShot G15, PowerShot S110, PowerShot S100, and PowerShot S100V along with support for the EF70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens.

There are also some bug fixes in the new version.

  • Improved accuracy of the lens data of Digital Lens Optimizer for EF50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro, EF24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, EF-S60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lenses.
  • Fixed the problem where it takes time to display a preview image on the high resolution display.
  • Fixed the phenomenon on the Mac OS in which RAW images imported via remote shooting are not displayed for preview in some cases.

Canon Professional Network posted a short tutorial about how to use Adobe Lightroom for mobile.

War photographer and living legend Don McCullin knighted by the Queen

Don McCullin now is Sir Don McCullin; the British photographer was knighted in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Sir Don McCullin, 80 years old, is a living legend in photography. Some say he is the greatest living war photographer. From the Canon Professional Network:

Sir Don, one of the most influential photojournalists in the history of photography, has a career that spans over half a century. His knighthood, which recognises his services to photography, is particularly special for him. “It’s one of those things that you can’t really come to terms with right away,” he remarks. “There I am at 80 years of age and then suddenly this thing is bestowed upon me. I don’t think for a second that it’s going to make the slightest difference to the last few years of my life but it’s a warm and comfortable feeling knowing that my life’s work has been appreciated. I’m very happy about it, of course.”

He continues: “This award honours my father’s name. It’s an honour for my family. Without bragging, I’ve got so many awards but this really is the mother of all of them. At the end of the day I’ve always kept a balance with receiving honours because my work has been concerned about other people’s suffering and lives that have been lost, so I have to be careful about how I talk about this award. It’s a very fine line for me. So the last word on this, is that yes of course I’m thrilled because it means that my life’s work has been recognised.”

Sir Don McCullin, who as far as I know never was a Canon shooter, embraced digital photography in 2013. Sir Don McCullin has always been critical on digital photography. However, in 2013 Canon managed to convince Sir Don McCullin to work on a documentary called “Seeking the Light” (below, he used an [shoplink 2431]EOS 5D Mark III[/shoplink]).

Among the many things Sir Don is, he was a war photographer, and not a common one. The video below is a short interview with Sir Don on war, humanity and journalism.
