Canon Professional Services Keeps Professional Sports Photographers Ready For Action at Rio 2016

Canon is ready for the Olympics in Brasil. Press release:

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 3, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will be bringing their service and support expertise to Brazil to help maximize the uptime and performance of its users’ professional imaging equipment. From pro DSLR cameras and EF lenses to broadcast television lenses, Canon’s award-winning service and support staff will be providing preventative maintenance and repairs to help professionals who have put their trust in Canon imaging equipment.

Canon’s team of over 70 highly trained technicians and support staff will be in Brazil for nearly a month to support professional photographers and broadcasters, just as they do throughout the year. Canon Professional Services (CPS) is set to provide comprehensive equipment maintenance and repairs, extensive equipment loans and expert technical support.

Canon set to hold an “EOS 5D” event in Japan on August 27 (to display the EOS 5D Mark IV?)

Canon Japan announced a series of “EOS 5D”-related events to be held in Japan on August 27. Is this to introduce the EOS 5D Mark IV?

While there is no explicit mention of new products, it seems to fit pretty well with a EOS 5D Mark IV announcement on August 25 or 25. If the EOS 5D Mark IV is in the picture above it could be the one on that’s on the very left (though you can not see a “Mark IV” moniker).

If I got the machine translated text right, there will be a first event with seminars and photo exhibitions with 13 photographers, and a nationwide (Japan) event, also with seminars and exhibitions, with 16 photographers.

The events seem to be all about the history of the EOS 5D series, from the beginning to what I guess will likely be the EOS 5D Mark IV.

We still do not have reliable information about the specifications of the EOS 5D Mark IV. 24MP or 28MP sensor resolution are both rumoured, WiFi and/or GPS should also be on board.

Samyang announce 35mm F1.2 ED AS UMC CS lens for mirrorless systems

Samyang (Rokinon, Bowers etc) announced a new, super fast lens, the Samyang 35mm F1.2 ED AS UMC CS. The Samyang 35mm F1.2 is a lens for mirrorless camera systems, hence it will come with a mount for Canon’s EOS M system (and for Fuji X , Sony E and MFT mounts).

Canon EOS C300 Mark II firmware 1.0.4.1.0 released

Canon released a firmware update for the Canon EOS C300 Mark II. You can download it here.

Firmware Version 1.0.4.1.00 incorporates the following update:

  1. Adds Canon Log 3.
  2. Reduces Canon Log 2 noise in dark areas.
  3. Enables magnification to be used even during recording.
  4. The following features are enabled when these lenses are attached: CN7x17 KAS S/E1*3, CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S or CN20x50 IAS H/E1.
    – Enables autofocus using the Dual Pixel CMOS AF function. (Not applicable to the CN20x50 IAS H/E1 lens)
    – Enables the joystick on the camera’s grip unit to be set to operate the zoom.
    – Enables control of iris to be set to manual operation, and control of focus, zoom and iris using the separately-sold Remote Controller RC-V100.
    – Enables automatic aperture and push auto iris functions.
    – Enables retrieval of metadata, such as the model name and the focal distance of the lens attached, and display of metadata on the camera,
  5. Enables Dual Pixel Function when these lenses are attached: CN7x17 KAS S/E1 lens, CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S lens or any of the EF cinema prime lenses.
  6. Adds peripheral illumination/chromatic aberration correction for the following lenses:
    – COMPACT-SERVO lenses: CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S
    – CINE-SERVO lenses: CN20x50 IAS H/E1
    – EF lenses: EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM, EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
  7. Enhances menu operations so that settings related to resolution/color sampling, etc. are retained to the extent possible when changing recording settings such as the frame rate.
  8. Supports ACESproxy (ACES 1.0).
  9. Alleviates the black-dot phenomenon that appears in the periphery of high-brightness light sources.

Caution:
– You cannot perform the firmware update using CFast 2.0 cards. Please use a commercially available SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card that is 64MB or more for the firmware update.
– Firmware version 1.0.4.1.00 is for updating Cinema EOS C300 Mark II cameras running firmware version 1.0.0.1.00 – 1.0.3.1.00. If your camera’s firmware is already version 1.0.4.1.00, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Once the camera is updated to the latest version, it cannot be restored to a previous version.
– For further information, please refer to the latest version of the unit’s Instruction Manual that is released with the firmware update.
