Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Review (good sharpness, nice bokeh & pleasing rendering)

RF 800mm f/11 IS STM review

Here is a fresh Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM review.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Fixed f/11 Aperture
  • Retractable, Locking Lens Barrel
  • Gapless Dual-Layer Diffractive Optics
  • STM Stepping AF Motor
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Compatible with RF Extenders

The Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM Review comes from Admiring Light. The review is rather positive, comes with sample pictures. From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM continues the trend of unique and relatively high quality consumer-grade lenses from Canon. […] When the lens was first announced, like many I dismissed it immediately as too slow and limited. If you are in that camp, and you want a lightweight and compact lens with a lot of reach, I would strongly recommend trying out this lens.

I was quite pleased to see that image quality is very good for such an optic. While not reaching the lofty heights of Canon’s big white supertelephotos, the RF 800mm f/11 produces images with good sharpness, nice bokeh and an overall pleasing rendering that punches above its price point and weight. The biggest compromise for that size, cost and reach is the fixed f/11 aperture, which means that this lens is going to require higher ISOs for fast shutter speeds, especially in lower light situations. The slow aperture also limits the autofocus area, which can make it a little more difficult to track subjects.

Also interesting: an interview with the engineers who developed the lens. Also, Canon already said there will be more such lenses. For more Canon RF 800mm f/11 review stuff have a look here.

Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro Review (great lens with some added weirdness)

RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS review

Here is a new Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro Review. The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro is a lens getting many positive reviews. A rather interesting lens for any EOS R owner.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • 1.4x Magnification with Autofocus
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/32
  • Minimum Focusing Distance: 10.2″
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Smooth and Quiet Auto Focus
  • Optical Image Stabilization; Hybrid IS
  • Control Ring for Direct Setting Changes
  • 9-Blade Diaphragm
  • Weather-Sealed Construction

The experts at Optical Limits posted their Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro review. From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 100mm f/2.8 L USM macro IS is a great lens with some added weirdness. Optically, it is capable of delivering very sharp images straight from f/2.8 – just as you would expect from a moderately fast macro lens. Image distortions are basically negligible even without correction. Lateral CAs are on the low side as well and can be easily corrected anyway. This can’t be said of the raw vignetting which is comparatively high at f/2.8 so auto-correction should remain activated. The quality of the bokeh is generally pleasing with a smooth background blur and nicely rendered highlights. The foreground blur isn’t ideally rendered but that’s usually of lesser concern. Bokeh lovers may also like the SA feature on the lens but, to be honest, for most of us, it’ll remain an oddity that you have to pay for without using it. Maybe video makers can appreciate it more than photographers. That being said – the massive focus-breathing doesn’t help with videos. A bit concerning are the RSAs when stopping down – focus shifts aren’t helpful at very close focus distances. It’s something to keep in mind when shooting at least.

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS Review (super lens, highly competitive price)

RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS Review

Here is a Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. One of the less expensive lens with an exceptional performance.

At a glance:

  • RF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/5.6 to f/45
  • One UD Element, One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
  • Nano USM AF Motor
  • Maximum Magnification: 0.41x at 400mm
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
  • Customizable Control Ring
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

ePhotozine posted their full Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS review. And like the other reviews we featured, this one too is rather fond of the lens. They gave the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS a 4.5/5 rating and a “Highly Recommended”. From their conclusion:

Canon RF users are being treated here with a super lens, with real pulling power to bring in those more distant subjects, plus the bonus of having an impressive close-up ability. And all at a highly competitive price. If only there was weather resistance then it really would be hard to beat.

Lenses that go beyond 300mm have always had a serious price penalty, but it does look as though this is now breaking down and bringing that 400mm reach more within a reasonable budget.

For the Canon RF user, this lens looks to be a bit of a no-brainer, with most of the right features, the right quality and the right price. ‘Highly Recommended’.
