Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II Teardown – Is this the best Lens ever build?

Is this the best lens ever built?” wonders Lensrental’s Roger Cicala while tearing apart Canon’s new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens.

R. Cicala writes:

I know I can’t really, without showing you dozens of other lenses, do a good job of impressing you with just how robustly engineered this lens is. I will say that the insides look more like what we’d expect to see in a 500mm f/4 or 600mm f/4 lens, rather than a telezoom. It’s by far the most heavily engineered zoom lens [we] have ever seen; and we’ve seen the insides of dozens of lenses in this range.

Well done, Canon engineers, well done!

The whole disassembling process is documented with lots of images – very interesting to see how this lens is build internally, and to read Cicala’s comments about how well Canon engineered this lens.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II is not a budget lens, selling for $2,199 (B&H Photo | Adorama  | Amazon.

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Sample Pictures (DPReview) – EDIT

Bildschirmfoto 2015-02-10 um 06.39.31

EDIT: I made a big typo mess here, it’s the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM not the Canon 11-24mm. Apologies; this happens when you are in a hurry.

DPReview posted a set of sample pics shot with Sigma’s 24mm f/1.4 lens.

Yesterday Signa announced the price of the new Sigma 24mm f/1.4 lens ($849). Pre-orders at BHphoto and Adorama. Once again Sigma made an interesting lens at an affordable price. I am pretty sure this lens will perform on the same level as the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM ArtSigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, and the awesome Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lenses.

Hi there. Another round-up of Canon EOS M3 previews and information.

Pre-order the EOS M3 at DigitalRev (ships internationally).

Canon EOS 5DS & 5DS R Technical Review by Tony Northrup (and thoughts on lens resolution)

Tony Northrup does an exhaustive technical review of Canon’s new EOS 5DS and 5DS R (preview videos). There is a lot of talk about resolution and how much resolution modern lenses have. He does some math do compute a “perceptual resolution”, i.e. an approximate figure of an optic’s resolution, to get an idea on how well a given lens could do on the 5DS and 5DS R sensor.

EOS 5DS and 5DS R previews and hands-on: Canon Japan’s EOS 5DS image and video samples and EOS 5DS R image samples. Digital Life Innnovator posted a set of EOS M3 sample pics. I think these are the first independent M3 sample pics that have been published. Please note: the samples were shot with a pre-production model of the EOS M3.

The pics were shot at a blogger convention where Canon presented their latest products. Head over to Digital Life Innovator for the samples and product shots of the M3, 5DS, the new Rebels, and the 11-24mm f/4L. The sample pics can be viewed at a bigger resolution but are resized to 80%, various lenses have been used.

Digital Life Innovator posted also pics of the presentation Canon made for the EOS M3. Click here to see the slides (in Japanese, never the less interesting).

The EOS M3 (announcement & more) will not be available in the US, only in EU and Asia. The EOS M3 will start shipping April 2015 with a RSP of £599.99/€769.99. Hands-on at DpreviewAmateur Photographerspecification sheetSample pics here (scroll down). EOS M3 article at CPN, and another article at CPN. M3 hands-on in Italian. Many product pictures and size comparison with the EOS M2 at Kakaku (Japanese).
