Canon EOS 7D Mark II Is Sharper And Has Less Noise Than EOS 5D Mark III

Look at the animated GIF above. Then look again, and maybe look at it one more time. Got it?

The animated GIF was made by professional photographer Arthur Morris. He shot two pics, one with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and the other with the EOS 7D Mark II. For both pics he used the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens with a Canon Extender EF 2X III. Both cameras were set at ISO 400 and shot with 1/2500 at f/8. From the resulting images he made the 100% crop above.

Arthur Morris correctly notes two things (image above):

  • The feathers behind and above the bird’s eye are sharper in the 7D II image than in the 5D III image.
  • As far as noise, the 7D II image looks a lot cleaner.

Wow! It’s true. There is less noise in the image shot with the EOS 7D Mark II, and the same pic is also sharper!

Want to get closer? Then have a look at the 200% crop below.

Amazing, isn’t it? Look how the fine details come out better in the EOS 7D Mark II image. The EOS 7D Mark II seems to be the killer APS-C DSLRs professional photographers were waiting for. Kudos Canon, and to Arthur Morris for the not so easy task to shot two pictures using cameras with different sensor size and making the animated GIFs. Head over to his post to grab the story.

The EOS 7D Mark II appears to be an awesome DSLR. Read also about the EOS 7D Mark II’s incredible high ISO performance, and about the advanced auto-focus.

Canon Powershot G7 X DxOMarked, Scores Better Than Sony RX100 III

Comp_2_scores

DxOMark felt the pulse of Canon’s  Powershot G7 X.

Canon’s new Powershot G7 X may score the same sensor as the Sony RX100 III, but the Powershot got a better DxOMark score (71 vs 67), and has more dynamic range. DxOMark writes:

With a DxOMark Sensor score 71 the G7 X ranks highly in our database rivaling classics such as the original full-frame Canon EOS 5D, the APS-C Nikon D300s and more modern designs such as the micro four thirds Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 and GM1 and outperforming the Nikon 1 series models with the same size sensor, such as the S1 at 56 points.

Powershot G7 X Is Canon’s Best Point-and-Shot In Years (says Gizmodo)

Gizmodo posted their review of Canon’s new Powershot G7 X. The Powershot that’s suspected to feature a Sony sensor (though there is no evidence for this).

They liked construction and handling, the touch screen, the “excellent image quality on par or better than anything else like it”.  To the question if you should buy it, the reviewer writes:

Yes. […] The RX100 line the camera competes with is incredible, and I would rather buy the G7 X anyhow. Mostly, this is because I like the solidly built, well-designed hardware that makes using the camera a pleasure. Sure, there are some downsides that might point you in another direction, like the lack of a hotshoe, and the better video quality on Sony’s compacts.

As [the reviewer] mentioned before, though, the G7 X is more than just a solid camera, it’s well-designed and executed to the point where it feels special. It gives […] that satisfied feeling [the reviewer] had all those years ago when the S90 nailed exactly what [he] needed. Except now, it’s a contender again.

The Powershot G7 X sells for $699, price check: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA.
