Ever Thought of a Canon DSLR as Action Camera? EOS 7D Mark II Skydiving Auto-Focus Test

When you think action camera you think small gear like GoPro’s Hero cameras, right? Think again. There is people wanting to try the EOS 7D Mark II’s auto-focus while skydiving with the DSLR mounted on the helmet (found at Action Camera Rumors).

Christian Anderl and Wolfgang Lienbacher, both Austria based photographers, together with the Red Bull Skydive Team, got the point:

[…] if this Autofocus works while you’re jumping out of a plane with it, chances are high it will work everywhere

Curious? Watch the [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink]’s auto-focus performance while falling down to earth at about 200km/h (124miles/h). The 7D2’s AF holds up to what you expect from a game changer. Once more Canon is showing what they do best: cranking out real tools for real photographers (you’re right Wade).

More about the story behind the video at Christian Anderl’s blog.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Review and First Impression by Tony Northrup

Tony Northrup produced a 40 minutes video where he introduces the new Canon [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink].

Mr. Northrup expresses his thoughts also about the recent DxOMark figures for the EOS 7D Mark II sensor. As all Canon sensors, the 7D Mark II sensor scored rather mediocrely. On the other hand this measure has little to do with real life performance (2 | 3).

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

DxOMark tested the sensor performance of the Canon [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink].

In the conclusion they write:

On paper, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II looks to be a solid choice for sports and action photographers, but its sensor performance is somewhat behind the best in class, at least at low ISOs. Relatively high noise, less discriminating color, and below-average DR at base ISO all continue to hold back Canon sensors against rivals, but that’s not the case at higher sensitivities. In fact, when light levels fall, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II performs competitively, even surpassing rivals slightly. If Canon could only address performance at base and low ISO, the EOS 7D Mk II would make a thoroughly convincing all-round choice, but in this category the Sony A77 II looks to be the more compelling option.

Well, we had more enthusiastic reviews about Canon’s new APS-C flagship (1 | 2 | 3). As often, real life performance and experiences differ from lab figures. For the DxOMark’s findings have a look at the review.

Canon C100 Mark II First Impression and Exclusive Footage (pre-production model)

Cinema5D felt the pulse of Canon’s new C100 Mark II. They got a pre-production model or “beta stage camera”. Some excerpts from the hands-on:

The list of improvements over the original Canon C100 is rather large. MP4 recording, 1080 50/60P in up to 35 Mbps data rate, an OLED screen, a new high resolution EVF and an overall new placement of buttons just to name a few.

They found the following highlights:

  • Dual media recording for backup or continuous recording
  • “In-body” microphone. No need to attach the top handle (for sound reference only. Microphone is always in automatic mode).
  • Pre recording function
  • Jog cursor is now placed on the foldable OLED screen for easier navigation
  • Very good EVF and OLED screens assuring easy manual focusing

There were also things they didn’t like. To read about them head over to Cinema5d and read the review.

The Canon C100 sells for $5,499 and can be pre-ordered at B&H Photo and Adorama.

Roger Cicala Tears The EOS 7D Mark II Apart (best weather-sealing he saw)

The red arrows point to thick, flexible rubber gaskets sealing the back of the 7D Mark II (the one above, below you see the classic 7D, image courtesy of lensrentals.com)

Lensrental’s Roger Cicala took a Canon EOS 7D Mark II and teared it apart.

He says the “Canon 7D Mk II may be the best weather-sealed camera [he has] run across“. As you may figure out, the weather-sealing of the [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink] was of major interest while dissecting the camera.

Enough said. Head over to LensRentals to see all the pics and the description of how they dismantled the EOS 7D Mark II.
