Canon Explorer Ulla Lohmann on the Powershot G7 X

Canon Professional Network article about the new Canon Powershot G7 X. While you will hardly find anything negative, the article is never the less a good insight on what a pro can do with a G7 X. She says:

This is in many ways the perfect camera for an adventure photographer like me […] It’s professional quality but in a pocket size. My most favourite thing about it is the f/1.8 aperture in the brilliant f/1.8-2.8 24-100mm 4.2x zoom lens. Because of the G7 X’s large 1.0-type sensor it invites you to be more creative. You can introduce nice bokeh and blur into your shots and thanks to the flip screen it is easy to get creative with your compositions too. That’s very cool. It encourages you to be ‘looser’ with your photography, experimenting and being more creative than you might have otherwise been with a DSLR.

Canon C100 Mark II First Impression and Side-by-Side with C100 Mark I

Cinema5d posted a Canon EOS C100 Mark II hands-on with comparison to the C100 Mark I.

They say:

Canon improved a lot of small things with regards to handling and usability in the C100 Mark II, and slightly improved image processing with a newer processing unit – which results in cleaner images. Overall it’s just an incremental update though, and the lack of 4K recording, higher internal bitrates and only up to 60fps in 1080p leave a lot to be desired.

The Canon C100 sells for $5,499 and can be pre-ordered at B&H Photo and Adorama.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II High ISO Test and Comparison with 7D and 5D3 (7D2 one stop below 5D3)

Japanese site Photo Studio 9 (translated) posted an EOS 7D Mark II review with a lot of sample pictures, and with an eye on the high ISO performance of Canon’s new APS-C flagship.

While we had another, more real-world oriented review that pointed out how excellent the high ISO performance of the 7D Mark II is, even stressing that it had less noise than the full-frame EOS 5D Mark III, this review gives possibly a better view on the 7D Mark II’s high ISO performance. However, it still is very very good.

Among the many sample pics posted by Photo Studio 9, there are two images I want to outline here. First one is the pic above where you see a high ISO comparison between the [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink], the [shoplink 337]EOS 7D[/shoplink], and the [shoplink 2431]EOS 5D Mark III[/shoplink]. The image above shows results with no noise reduction applied in camera. You can see that the 7D Mark II can not really hold up to the full-frame 5D Mark III. Never the less, I think it is performing pretty good. I would say the 7D Mark II is one stop behind the 5D Mark III when it comes to high ISO performance – and that is great for an APS-C sensor. The noise on the 5D Mark III looks better in my opinion, with less color noise at the very high ISO settings. The 7D Mark II looks sharper but the 5D3 keeps more details.

Below you see a comparison between the three mentioned DSLRs, but this time using ISO settings from ISO 200 to ISO 3200 (again no noise reduction). Here too I would say the 7D Mark II is one stop behind the 5D Mark III.

I recently took delivery of Canon’s new 7D Mark II APS-C camera, I got to take the camera out with me to a Professional Rugby Match on Friday 31st October. As the 7D Mark II is designed as a sports and action camera this was an ideal opportunity to put it through it’s paces. This isn’t a technical pixel peeping review of the camera more first a impressions feel for how it performed.

As a freelance photographer I have to buy my own equipment, I currently shoot with two Canon 5D Mark III’s but for sport I really need something with a higher frame rate and deeper buffer. I was giving serious consideration to the 1DX but that is a significant investment so when the rumours of a 7D Mark II starting getting stronger I held off until I was certain that the camera was a reality. Canon announced the 7D Mark II on 15th September and I pre-ordered one as soon as they were listed […]. The specifications of the camera looked exactly what I needed; AF on a par or better than the 5D3; 10 frames per second with a huge buffer and the added benefit of a 1.6 crop factor. I owned the original 7D and in fairness it is a great camera but the image quality suffered a lot when the ISO was raised beyond around 1250, in my experience. So the one thing that concerned me about the 7D Mark II was if the image quality would be good enough for my purposes.

When sample images come out for a new camera they don’t tend to show the kind of images in the situations that matter to me and the same was true of the 7D Mark II. But when Scott Kelby showed some sample images he had taken at an American Football game I started to get very hopeful that the camera would more than meet my needs.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Video Review

Faymusmedia on Youtube posted a 44 minutes long video review about Canon’s new APS-C flagship, the EOS 7D Mark II.

The review is more of the “real-world” sort and not a laboratory test, with a comprehensive introduction to the highlights and new features of the 7D Mark II. The reviewer walks around the streets of New York and shots what you would shot outside a test lab. The [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink] was tested with the amazing Sigma [shoplink 14551]18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM[/shoplink]. I think the 7D Mark II and the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 are a fantastic bundle. Given the excellent high ISO performance of the 7D Mark II and the bright aperture of the Sigma, who needs full-frame?
