Canon EOS 7D Mark II Review (Digital Camera World)

Digital Camera World posted their review about Canon’s new APS-C flagship, the EOS 7D Mark II. Excerpt:

AF system [is] very fast and accurate even in low light. And, with the right AF point selection mode set it does a great job of keeping up with moving subjects and tracking them around the frame.

They were “really impressed” by the EOS 7D Mark II, and think “it’s Canon’s best APS-C format camera to date and it is capable of producing superb images“.

The [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink] is a champion when it comes to stuff like weather sealing, a highly advanced AF, and industry leading high ISO performance. More about the EOS 7D Mark II can be seen here.

Canon Powershot G7 X Review (excellent IQ and a lot of cons, DPreview)

G7 X Review

Digital Photography Review published the full review of Canon’s new Powershot G7 X, and it isn’t a favourable review.

The only noteworthy “pros” are the “excellent image quality” and “sensor/lens combination [that] allows for very shallow depth-of-field“. They start and finish the conclusion…

[…] Canon hasn’t taken a lot of risks with the G7 X: its body is essentially a mash-up of the PowerShot S120 and G1 X Mark II, and its sensor is the same that’s found in Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II and III. Canon has tried to separate itself from the very small crowd by giving the G7 X a longer lens, selfie-friendly LCD, and dedicated exposure compensation dial. On paper, the G7 X sounds like the camera to beat. In practice, that wasn’t the case.

[…] Canon went with the excellent Sony 20MP BSI-CMOS sensor and added a longer (yet still fast) lens that is great for portraiture. Sadly, where the G7 X falls apart is performance, usability, and battery life

Now think that one of the two pros quoted above refers to a Sony sensor and there isn’t much left. The WiFi enabled G7 X isn’t inexpensive either, drawing you back for [shoplink 22665]$699[/shoplink]. Given that the G7 X competes with Sony’s RX100 III, with both cameras featuring the same sensor, it comes a bit to a surprise learning that the G7 X gets a better DxOMark score than the RX100 III.

Not all G7 X reviews featured here at CW have such a critic point of view.

Canon Pro Network Articles About new Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

Canon Professional Network posted 2 articles about Canon’s new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens ($2,199, pre-order: Adorama and B&H Photo.).

The first article is titled Getting closer to nature with the new EF100-400mm superzoom. Wildlife photographer and Canon Explorer Danny Green shares his thoughts and experience with the new EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II.

The 100-400mm lens is probably the most important piece of glass anyone interested in wildlife photography needs to have if they are to take their photography seriously, and Canon has taken the original and much loved 100-400mm and brought it bang up to date with some fantastic new features

The other article is a technical introduction to the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens.

The new Air Sphere Coating has been developed by Canon to minimise reflections and flare. It consists of tiny nano particles of air trapped in a film above the conventional multi-layer coatings. These Air Sphere particles form a super low reflective coating on the surface of the lens element to reduce reflection and act as a ‘crash mat’ to reduce the speed that light travels through the layer so there is not such a large change in speed when the light enters through the glass of the lens element. The major cause of reflections is the sudden change in the speed of light as it passes from air to glass, and this new technology prevents the cause of visible ghosting and flare.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Review (Reviewed.com)

[shoplink 22664]7d2_king[/shoplink]

Reviewed.com posted their review of the [shoplink 22664]EOS 7D Mark II[/shoplink]. The 7D Mark II got a score of 91, and “is better than 94% of the DSLRs” Reviewed has tested. From the conclusion:

Altogether the 7D Mark II is one of the more impressive APS-C DSLRs we’ve seen yet. It’s extremely fast for a camera that has an optical viewfinder, takes great photos, and has one of the most impressive autofocus systems available. There are mirrorless cameras that are just as fast (if not faster) and have better dynamic range, but the 7D Mark II trounces those cameras in low light, where it barely misses a beat.

[the EOS 7D Mark II] is clearly geared toward advanced shooters who want a camera that is fast, has pro-level autofocus performance and control, and is customizable to the shooter’s needs. It’s also durable enough to stand up to the rigors of daily use, with a shutter that can withstand 200,000 cycles and some of the most impressive weather-sealing around.

[…]

For the money there are faster cameras, there are cameras that are better at shooting video, and there are cameras that have more features, but the 7D Mark II is a compelling all-around package that finally feels like a complete effort from the market leader; this is what you get when Canon doesn’t hold anything back.
