Canon EOS M50 4K vs 1080p video performance review

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs posted a neat 9 minutes video where he compares the Canon EOS M50‘s video performance, 4K vs 1080p. You likely know that Canon crippled 4K video mode on the EOS M50 to go without the company’s amazing Dual Pixel AF technology. Never the less, it’s Canon’s first consumer camera featuring 4K video. So let’s see.

The Canon EOS M50 is indeed getting a lot of positive reviews, not just because of the interesting price ($779). More Canon EOS M50 coverage.

Canon EOS M50 review (surprising camera, Photography Blog)

Canon EOS M50

  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

The folks at Photography Blog reviewed the new Canon EOS M50, the company’s first consumer camera with 4K video.

From the conclusion:

Canon’s latest mirrorless camera is a curious beast, on the one hand offering several headline-grabbing features that promise to out-perform the company’s own flagship model, whilst on the other falling short of its full potential.

What could have been a vlogger’s dream ticket, for example, falls well short of the pre-release hype thanks to a crippled 4K mode. Canon made lots of noise about the camera’s 4K capability, but “forgot” to mention several important caveats that render it at best difficult to use, at worse almost impossible. As the first Canon mirrorless camera to offer 4K recording, the EOS M50 is simply a disappointment.

[…] In summary, the Canon EOS M50 is a surprising camera. It’s surprisingly capable for what is after all only a “mid-range” camera, but unfortunately it also surprisingly under-performs in a few key areas, which may make or break its potential appeal. Read the review…

Canon EOS M50 review (very good image quality, DPReview)

  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

DPReview posted their full Canon EOS M50 review. Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, and the first featuring 4K video, gets another quite positive review.

From the conclusion:

At first glance, the Canon EOS M50 could pass for a smaller, less expensive version of the company’s EOS M5. Despite the surface similarities, the real changes are inside. The M50 is the first Canon camera to use the Digic 8 processor and the only non-pro model to support 4K video capture. The M50 also has an improved version of its Dual Pixel AF system, a new Raw format and improved wireless functionality.

The M50 is a camera that anyone can pick up and use

The M50 sits in a category best called ‘entry-level plus’, which are relatively inexpensive and easy-to-use cameras for those who want something better than their smartphone. Its peers range from Micro Four Thirds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic to those with larger APS-C sensors from Sony and Fujifilm. Read the review…

A cute little camera, the Canon EOS M50, especially for the vlogging crowd.

Canon EOS M50 review (excellent color reproduction, ePhotozine)

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • UHD 4K and HD 720p120 Video Recording
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600, Extended ISO 51200
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

ePhotozine reviewed Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors), the company’s first consumer cam featuring 4K video.

In the conclusion they write:

The Canon EOS M50 offers a compact, DSLR styled mirrorless camera, with an updated 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, which gives excellent image quality, with the same excellent colour reproduction that you get with Canon EOS DSLRs. You also get high-speed continuous shooting, 143 focus points, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It’s also one of the cheapest Canon cameras to record 4K video, and the side mic socket will make it appealing for those who want to record video.

If you want to use Canon EF lenses, with an adapter, on a smaller camera body, or want to use one of the EF-M lenses, then the Canon EOS M50 is a compact option with great levels of performance, and is an enjoyable camera to use. It’s just frustrating that in order to get the best from the camera you have to use the EOS-EF-M adapter, due to the lack of native Canon EF-M lenses available. Read the review…
