Good glass makes the difference: zoom lens recommendation for Canon EOS 7D Mark II

Eos 7d Mark Iii

Canon’s flagship APS-C DSLR, the EOS 7D Mark II is likely the first APS-C camera playing a serious role for professional photographers: highly advanced 65 points AF system, Dual Pixel AF, 10 fps, anti-flicker technology, one of the best, if not the best, weather sealing in the industry, and much more.

Given Canon’s extensive lens line-up (and third party players), you may wonder which lenses are best suited for the 7D Mark II. DxOMark posted the first part of their lens recommendations for the 7D Mark II, zoom lenses. Five categories of zoom lenses are considered: ultra-wide-angle zooms, standard zooms, super-zooms, fast telephoto zooms, and slow telephoto zooms. DxOMark recommends:

  • Best ultra-wide-angle zoom: Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 PRO DX
  • Best standard zoom: Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM ART
  • Best super-zoom: Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
  • Best fast telephoto zoom: Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM SPORT
  • Best slow telephoto zoom: Canon EF 200-400 f/4L IS USM

A list you can agree with. You may wonder how the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, a kit lens, made it to be the best standard super-zoom lens. Easy: it performs great. Canon’s latest kit lenses all work great. It’s one of the things were Canon excels: making inexpensive lenses with very good performance.

Nothing to wonder about the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens, one of Sigma’s recent masterpieces and the world’s first zoom lens for APS-C sensor with continuous f/1.8. Those who own the Sigma know why I call it a masterpiece. According to DxOMark, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 beats them all, Zeiss and Canon L lenses included, and at a price ($799) that’s hard to beat when it comes to bang for the bucks.

Can’t say anything about the Tokina AT-X 11-16mm f/2.8 PRO DX, I never used it. I also never used the Canon EF 200-400mm f/4L IS Extender 1.4x, but I guess a lens that costs like a small car has to be the best. I had the chance to play around with the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM SPORT. As with all Sigma Global Vision lenses, you get a lot of bang for the bucks.

See DxOMark’s lens recommendations for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. The EOS 7D Mark II regularly ships for $1,499, but is currently on eBay by a top rated seller. To learn more about the Canon EOS 7D Mark II read the overview after the break, or see all our 7D Mark II coverage.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L DxOMarked (the lens is a champ)

DxOMark tested the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L, the company’s latest ultra-wide angle lens, and a lens that only gets highest regards. Not a budget lens, the EF 11-24mm f/4L sells at $3,000.

In the conclusion:

While traditionally strong in its telephoto lineup, Canon has always been rather weak in offering a range of ultra-wide-angle lenses. When introduced a few years ago, the EF 8-15mm f4L USM Fisheye zoom helped redress the balance, but it didn’t go far enough. Now with this new lens, Canon has proved it can compete with its long-term rival Nikon as well as with new challengers, such as Sigma, who offer some very specialized models at accessible prices. Sure, the EF 11-24mm f4L USM lacks the fast f2.8 aperture of the Nikon, but Canon traded that for wider coverage and didn’t make any concessions with image quality. Even the price is relatively accessible. Read the test report at DxOMark.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS vs EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II (with 2x converter), which one is better?

Tony Northrup on YouTube compares the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM with the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM (mounted on a Canon 2x teleconverter).

Which is better? If you get the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II lens and add the Canon 2X III teleconverter, you’ll be able to use the 70-200 at f/2.8 when you need to and two stops more light (and background blur) in that range than you can with the 100-400 II. When you need the extra reach, you can add the teleconverter and jump to 140-400mm f/5.6. The total cost is pretty similar, so which is better? Will the teleconverter make the 70-200 noticeably less sharp at 400mm?

Watch the video review to learn how the two lenses compare.

Canon EOS 5Ds R review (jaw-dropping image quality, Photography Blog)

eos 5ds

Photography Blog posted their full review of Canon ‘s new, 50MP EOS 5Ds R. The “R” version of the 5Ds is the model featuring an optical low pass cancellation filter. From the conclusion:

The Canon EOS 5DS R combines the proven design of the popular 5D Mark III with jaw-dropping image quality from the new 50.6 megapixel sensor. Slow continuous shooting speeds and a limited ISO range by modern standards means that the 5DS R certainly isn’t suited to every photographic situation, with the venerable 5D Mark III and the EOS 7D Mk II being better all-rounders, while the huge file sizes and sheer level of detail demand that you use the best post-processing setup and the latest “L-series” lenses to do justice to the camera. The sheer level of detail that can obtained from the 5DS R and a high-quality lens like the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is difficult to ignore once you’ve experienced it, though, so if you can commit both financially and in terms of time to the Canon EOS 5DS R, we’d whole-heartedly recommend it. Read the review at Photography Blog.

Forget all the DxOMark discussion, and don’t be worried by the EOS 5Ds/5Ds R scores, since they mean very little at the end of the day. The image quality of the 5Ds and 5Ds R beats anything else out there.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens DxOMarked

DxOMark published their test results for the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens. From the conclusion:

As the replacement for the original model, Canon have improved just about everything they can from operation through to optical quality. However it’s the performance at the long-end that’s crucial and while Canon have made advances most of the gains are in the outer field where users of Canon’s crop bodies aren’t so likely to benefit. Sure the chromatic aberration is lower and sharpness at the edges is better than the old model but users aren’t going to see any improvement in the center.

The new model is also up against a capable and more accessibly priced rival in the form of the Tamron 150-600mm though it’s larger still and somewhat disappointing at 600mm. For all that, the Canon is an attractive option and a strong choice for the long term. Read DxOMark’s review.
