Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L Review (a seriously good lens)

canon rf mount Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L Review Canon rf lenses

Here is a Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L review. This lens for the EOS R system is an optical masterpiece, heavy, bulky, and pricey. Never the less, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L is a remarkable lens, made to showcase the capabilities of the RF mount.

Ted Forbes of The Art of Photography discusses all the goods and amazing features of the super fast Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L. The lens is also pretty unique, as Ted Forbes lines out.

Canon started big with their first round of RF mount lenses for their mirrorless system. The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L is a seriously good lens. Its versatile enough to be very sharp, but can also shoot wide open for some gorgeous and often abstract bokeh rendering. Building on the EF 50mm f/1.2, Canon corrected many of the aberrations and give us a sharper, high resolving lens. This does come with some tradeoffs – this lens is big. Its also very heavy and the price is not cheap. But if you’re willing to sacrifice some of the conveniences of portability for image quality – this lens is well worth the entry price.

Its also worth noting at the time I’m filming this – there is no equivalent to this lens in any mirrorless system. Nikon only have a 50mm f/1.8 and Sony have several options – but only at f/1.8 and f/1.4. This is a unique lens with a beautiful rendering and performance.

Is The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III The Best Mirrorless Camera Available?

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Review

Ok, I admit the title sounds a bit weird. But bear with us for some thoughts about the DSLR vs mirrorless debate, and the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

Dan Watson argues the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III beats them all when using live view or mirrorless mode. So, do we really need all those (upcoming) EOS R models? Let’s say that the EOS-1D X Mark III is the fastest still FF camera around with some outstanding video features. Ok. for sure it’s bulkier than even the largest MILC, but then: mirrorless cameras are not really small factor when using top tier lenses.

Have a look at Dan Watson’s video and sound off in the common section.

Did Sigma Just Save The Canon EOS M System With These Fast Primes?

sigma 16mm

If there is something all agree about, it’s the lack of native lenses for the Canon EOS M system, especially fast lenses. But despair not! Here comes Sigma to the rescue.

Sigma released three fast prime lenses for the EOS M: 16mm f/1.4, 30mm f/1.4, and 56mm f/1.4.

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs has a close look at these Sigma lenses for the EOS M in the video below.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS Review (incredibly seductive bokeh, Photography Blog)

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 DS Review

After the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L, Photography Blog also posted their Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS review. The “DS” is for Defocus Smoothing, a proprietary optical technology by Canon.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS is one of the boutique lenses for the Canon EOS R system, i.e. a lens that showcases what you can do with the new RF mount.

Photography Blog gave the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS a “Highly Recommended” rating and 5/5 stars. From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS is the almost perfect lens for portrait photographers looking for that extra pizzazz in their images.

With its unique DS coating, the already enthralling bokeh produced by the standard, non-DS RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens becomes even softer and more dreamy, without sacrificing any of the outstanding sharpness that both lenses offer in spades.

The main trade-off for the buttery-smooth bokeh is the loss of light – effectively 1 1/3 stops darker when shooting at f/1.2 – which means that you’ll need to slow your shutter speed or bump up the ISO to compensate, neither of which are a great option.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS creates an incredibly seductive bokeh effect that’s hard to ignore once you’ve tasted it, though. It may be one of the most niche lenses that we’ve ever tested, and one of the most expensive, but it’s also one of the most distinctive…

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L Review (exemplary performance, DPReview)

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L review

DPReview posted their Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L review. The RF 85mm f/1.2L is one of the so called “boutique lenses” for the EOS R full frame mirrorless camera system, which means it is expensive.

From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM is about as removed as it could be from the sea of small, light mirrorless lenses we’ve seen in recent years, whose handful of optical foibles are intended from the outset to be masked by in-camera corrections. It’s unashamedly big, weighty and pricey, and those photographers prepared to tolerate this will be rewarded with exemplary performance.

There’s little to grumble with its build quality, and the stated weather resistance is reassuring. Focusing speeds are impressive – albeit not class-leading – for a lens this substantial. While the motor itself isn’t the quietest – and consequently not really suitable for use during video recording – speed and accuracy is arguably more important here than discretion. Manual focus users may prefer a more tactile focusing ring, but the process of manually focusing itself is positive, particularly once you adjust the focusing ring’s response and call on the various in-camera focusing aids.

[…] minor frustrations aside, this lens shines brightly. Very brightly. Sharpness is superb wide-open, and this continues to be the case as you close down the aperture.
