Reports about Canon XC10 lens sliding out when used on drone

First reviews about the Canon XC10 aren’t really stellar, and now reports about the XC10’s lens “sliding out” when the camera is used on a drone appear to make the figures even worse. If true, this is particularly embarrassing since Canon touts the XC10 as made for drones.

Drone operator Scott Winn tested a Canon XC10, and says:

The lens is a high quality 4k lens that was specially built for this camera and isn’t some kit lens. But never the less it is a fixed lens. On occasion while flying this camera when we would looks straight down the lens would slide out, and we would have to land to fix it. Perhaps this was a prototype issue, but all it takes is some tape to fix that. The autofocus seemed to have a harder time than it did when shooting from the ground. On the ground it was near flawless, but in the air we couldn’t get it to keep focus.

Having to fix a sliding lens with tape isn’t what you are willing to accept on a $2,500 camera.

[CW1] Canon working on a professional underwater camera?

A weird rumor surfaced. The rumor suggests Canon is working on a professional underwater camera that “would not require an underwater housing” and that is “far superior to any of the point and shoot options” out there.

I do not know how deep an underwater cameras has to go to be called a professional underwater camera. On the other hand I am pretty sure to know that without an external housing a camera can hardly be taken “seriously” underwater.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II firmware 1.04 locking up the camera?

A user in the Fred Miranda forum posted about an issue he or she has with the firmware update for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

[…] I decided to update the firmware since I do have the 70-200II […] Camera locked up twice shooting one game, I was looking through view finder turned away looked back through and had no info like it was shut off…the second time it was resuming from sleep….I have little doubt its the firmware…It also changed my MFA adjustments, and god help me I couldnt get it to repeat even my quick and dirty adjustments ( easy to do with a 300 2.8 and white lines on the ground at 45 degrees ) to MFA…it was perfect at +7 before ( and I routinely spot check each game )…it was closer to +4 after ( didnt realize this till I started reviewing some shots) then as I spot checked throughout the game I kept having to move it ( while not on a tripod with a release its a monopod and I use OS..I can shoot against objects to set the correct DOF vs object shot which is more important to me than sharpness on a chart..I do this all the time and its more repeatable than you think…Tomorrow I am going to do a factory reset and start over just to make sure…Proceed with caution…anyone have a link to the 1.02 firmware so I can put it back on there?

If you encounter this issue, try the following: 1) record the camera settings, 2) install the firmware update, 3) do a camera reset, 4) remove the battery for a few minutes, 5) restart the camera and 6) restore the settings. However, of the issue is in the firmware, this procedure will not help.
