Canon Sees Impossible, I See Nothing (UPDATE)

Canon Sees Impossible

Update: as a reader noted in the comments section, we will see something at 9am EST (2pm central European time). That’s what I have been told too.

It’s a while that we reached zero count here in Europe. Still the site does not show anything new. Be aware that the counter is location based, in the US there is still some time to go, in Asia it reached zero count since hours.

Something more or any news from other parts of the globe?

More on this in a previous post.

Sigma added support for the Canon EOS C100 to several lenses via firmware update. The firmware enables auto-focus at any aperture for these lenses when used on a Canon EOS C100:

  • Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM | A
  • Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS HSM “Macro” | C
  • Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM “Macro” | C
  • Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM | A

To update the lens’ firmware you need the Sigma USB Dock and Sigma Optimization Pro software.

Sigma Wants To Make A “Very Unique Lens That Never Existed”

In an interview with c|net, Mr. Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma, said some very interesting things. Judge for yourself:

What new models can we expect? Replacements for mainstay lenses like the 70-200mm or models that fit into the holes of your competitors’ product lines?
Yamaki: We have two directions. We have to develop the traditional lenses like the 50mm f1.4, but the other direction is that I really want to make a very unique lens that never existed in the market. […] We are always trying to some something new.

Is there anything new coming this year?
Yamaki: We have already announced our products for this year. Next year we will have several new items.

Something nobody else has?
Yamaki: Next year.

A zoom or prime [fixed focal length] lens?
Yamaki: Both. Well, we are still studying it. We’re not sure we can release it to the market. A new product is quite risky. Sometimes we have to give up in the middle of the development. We were very fortunate to complete the 18-35mm f1.8 design.

All this sound very interesting.

  1. Sigma wants to make a lens that does yet not exist (it would be the 2nd then, because the 18-35mm f/1.8 was also a total innovation, the first zoom lens with constant f/1.8)
  2. There will be new Sigma lenses in 2015
  3. These lenses will be zooms and primes

Go on Sigma!

At Canon They See Impossible – Strange Ad Pointing To Teaser Page

imp

Thanks to the reader who sent this.

An ad appeared on the New York Times, pointing to this page where Canon is teasing us with the following text:

THIS MESSAGE GOES

OUT TO FEAR, DOUBT,

LOGIC AND REASON.

To excuses, distractions, procrastination, inertia, critics, cynics,

realists, pessimists, resistance, conventional wisdom.

To the peanut gallery, the so-called experts, the good enoughs,

the urges to pass the buck,

the easy way out, the snooze button, the panic button,

and to that little voice in the back of your head that says,

“It can’t be done.”

To all of it, we apologize.

Because we don’t see what you see.

AT CANON, WE SEE IMPOSSIBLE

Very cryptic, and a bold statement too! The site shows a clock counting down. At the time of writing, 37 hours and 48 minutes are left to the teased event.

It appears to point to something important. New lenses? A new sensor? Or, eventually, a serious and pro-grade mirrorless camera?

Thoughts and comments welcome. Let me know what you think.
