Canon Set To Announce A New Speedlite Flash And The Powershot SX60 HS IS For Photokina?

I have been told that Canon might announce a new Speedlite for Photokina 2014. The Speedlite that might get substituted could be the 430EX II (introduced in 2007). No more information nor specs, unfortunately.

And there were various mentions that Canon might eventually announce the Powershot SX60 HS IS for Photokina 2014, the long overdue replacement for the popular Powershot SX50 HS IS (price & specs). The SX60 HS is rumored since a while. It was rumored to be announced in Spring, then in Summer 2014, and now the rumors point to Photokina 2014. So far no rumor got it right :-) I got no specs this time. Rumors in the past suggested a 60x zoom (with some specs), then a 100x zoom (there is a patent pointing in this direction). A zoom beyond 60x seems plausible to me.

Canon Announces Details Of Its Presence At Photokina 2014

Designed around helping photographers immerse themselves in the latest technologies, Canon’s programme at the show will offer visitors a digital imaging experience that highlights its industry leading range of products and services.
Canon’s stand at photokina 2014 will be dedicated to the journey of capturing a moment or memory. Within an open, free-roam environment, visitors will be invited to undertake shooting challenges, with experts on-hand to guide them along the way. The experiential event will go far beyond simple touch and try demonstrations, and instead provide the opportunity to truly experience the Canon range.The stand will also feature live presentation sessions with Canon’s world famous photography ambassadors. Presenters will include landscape and travel photographer David Noton, photojournalist and documentary filmmaker Ulla Lohmann, and action shooter Richard Walch, with each providing first-hand accounts of how Canon products help them to realise their individual visions. Furthermore, Canon Explorer Jörg Kyas will be taking on interactive challenges set by visitors – providing a unique way for enthusiasts to learn about new styles or techniques.In addition, Canon’s custom-designed platform for managing and sharing a world of images, irista, will be demonstrated, highlighting Canon’s dedication to furthering the capabilities of digital services. Visitors will also be able to browse Canon equipment and piece together their own ‘virtual kitbag’ using touchscreen tables placed around the stand.“photokina 2014 for us is about immersing customers in a world of exciting imaging possibilities,” said Alessandro Stanzani, Head of Consumer Imaging, Canon Europe. “We’re creating an experiential environment that will challenge visitors to think much more deeply about their photography. Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L II Review (Night and Landscape Photography)

Nature photographer David Kingham felt the pulse of Canon’s EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens (not the new 16-35mm f/4L IS) to see how well the lens suits for night photography and general landscape shooting. The focus is on night photography, David Kingham says:

[…] this lens performs very well at f/4 and okay at f/2.8, as I said earlier, not the best for night, but it is very good. With the Canon 6D I can easily take shots at ISO 12,800 to compensate for this loss of light at f/4.

The lens was tested on a Canon EOS 6D. The review comes with a huge set of sample pictures shot at night, and discusses coma and other artefacts that are typical for night photography. In the conclusion he writes:

 I have to say that I absolutely love this lens, it will never leave my bag. For landscape photography it’s stunning and a joy to use. For night photography it’s okay. […] When I’m backpacking or hiking though, this is the perfect lens that I can use during the day and night when weight is a major consideration. If you hate the idea of carrying around 3 lens for night photography this is the lens for you. […]  There’s always trade-offs when looking for an all-around lens, in this case I think the trade-offs are quite reasonable, I highly recommend this lens.
