Canon EOS R Overview and Hands-On Review (D. Abbott)

canon eos r firmware update

In anticipation of the full review, photographer and reviewer Dustin Abbott posted a neat 23 minutes video about his impressions with the new Canon EOS R.

He says:

There are things I love about the EOS R (fantastic fully articulating touchscreen, great grip, new control ring on lenses), but also a few missing pieces (no in-body-image-stabilization and burst rate is unimpressive).  The camera shows great potential for focus, however, with incredibly fast focus speeds with the new RF 24-105mm f/4L IS.  The new 24-105L kit lens is a clear improvement over previous 24-105mm lenses, and the EOS R also focuses very quickly and naturally with adapted EF mount lenses.

Sample images can be seen here.

Here is the video review.

Skylum Luminar 2018 Review (a pretty robust piece of software)

skylum luminar 2018

Dustin Abbott reviewed Skylum Luminar 2018, a photo editor that many are starting to see as a viable alternative to Lightroom.

A future, free update to Luminar 2018 will bring a library feature to the software, and I think then Luminar will be a full fledged alternative to Lightroom. At least it will be for me since I don’t like to pay a monthly fee to Adobe for using Lightroom. Skylum Luminar is very reasonably priced, and by using the code WATCH at checkout you get a $10 instant discount and pay $59 instead of $69.

D. Abbott about Luminar:

The amount of controls is impressive, and it includes standard features like Lens Corrections, Transform tools, and advanced Crop options while also mixing in some Photoshop-like tools like Clone and Stamp, Free Transform, and the ability to create layers and blend them in a variety of ways.  It’s not nearly as robust as Photoshop, obviously, but it probably does enough for 90% of users.

[Luminar] is a pretty robust piece of software that combines a very easy-to-use interface with the ability to make a massive amount of changes to the look of an image.  I think a lot of photographers will appreciate the ability to easily pick up the software and create what they like, and it is priced very reasonably for the amount of functionality built into it.

Canon Set To Use A Sony Back-Illuminated APS-C Sensor In Future Cameras?

sony

Another weird rumor to report.

It’s suggested Canon might use the new Sony IMX571 image sensor in an upcoming APS-C camera system. No hints if it will be a MILC or a DSLR.

The Sony IMX571 sensor is back-illuminated, has a resolution of 26MP and does 16 frame per second.

Despite Canon used Sony sensors in the past for their Powershot cameras, we do not think a Sony sensor will be featured on DSLR or mirrorless camera. We did not get any suggestion pointing in this direction.

Stay tuned.
