Canon Patent Application for a new mount type (but it doesn’t mean Canon’s FF MILC will feature it)

EDIT: it appears to be an EF mount with high speed electrical connections, not a hybrid mount, not a new mount type.

Hi Lows Note spotted a Canon patent application (2018-084713) for a mount type that can manage different types of lenses. It appears to be neither and EF nor an EF-M mount (but we are not really sure about that).

From the patent literature (machine translated):

Conventionally, the serial communication (synchronous serial communication) of a clock synchronization system has been adopted as a communication method of a camera and an interchangeable lens. The following technical contents are disclosed in the Patent document 1. First, synchronous serial communication is performed with the first communication speed with which an interchangeable lens old type can also communicate. When the interchangeable lens with which it is equipped is distinguished from a new lens by the communication content, it changes to the synchronous serial communication in a more nearly high-speed second communication speed.

What we understand from the patent literature is that the mount type can handle two different types of lenses (old type vs. not old type). This has led some people to speculate about a hybrid mount type that has to come with Canon’s future full frame mirrorless camera.

As cool as this would be, there is absolutely nothing in the patent literature that makes us think Canon will feature a hybrid mount type that will fit all of their lenses (with different mounts), and possibly even more.

In the image on top you can see an element (1D) that has the purpose to detect newer lenses, i.e. lenses with a more recent AF technology and interface protocol. The two kind of lenses referenced in the patent literature and in the excerpt above, are most likely lenses with an older AF interface protocol, and newer lenses with faster AF speed and an updated interface protocol.

This is the upcoming Kamlan 28mm f/1.4 lens for Canon EOS M systems (and other MILCs)

Machang Optics announced the development of the Kamlan 28mm f/1.4 lens. The Kamlan 28mm f/1.4  will be available for Canon EOS M systems, and for Sony E, Fuji X, and M4/3 mounts.

Starting from June 1, 2018, you’ll be able to order it for $199 on this Kickstarter page (where you can also view a gallery of sample images). Delivery is expected for August 2018.

28mm are 42mm equivalent when used with APS-C bodies, so this becomes a normal view lens on crop sensors.

One of the key strengths of the Kamland 28mm f/1.4 is its high degree of color accuracy and richness. Unlike some competing lenses, it does not introduce too much color cast to images but instead delivers a neutral, accurate color rendition even wide open, that will be useful to both stills photographers and video users as well.

The lens utilizes high quality optical glass with higher levels of refraction to help shape light more efficiently and to produce lower chromatic aberrations. Chromatic aberrations are noticeably more controlled than on competing lenses.

In real-world shooting there are minimal chromatic aberrations on the Kamlan 28mm f/1.4, and what aberrations do exist are easily corrected.

Canon discontinued the company’s last film camera, the Canon EOS-1V

Canon officially discontinued the Canon EOS-1V, the company’s last film camera.

The Canon EOS-1V, introduced in 2000, ends Canon’s 80 years lasting film camera business. The EOS-1V was the last professional film camera, and repair service will be available until October 31, 2025.

As Sankei reports, the production of the Canon EOS-1V stopped in 2010. Since then, Canon was selling the EOS-1V out of their inventory.

The EOS-1V is listed as no longer available at specialised retailers as B&H Photo and Adorama. but still can be found on eBay.

Nikon is now the last big player with professional film cameras on offer, the Nikon F6 and Nikon FM10
