Canon announces winners of ‘Iconic Images’ competition

London, UK, 24 November 2015 – Canon Europe today reveals the 10 finalists and overall winner of its pan-European ‘Iconic Images’ competition. Emanating from over 12,500 entrants across 18 European countries, Matt Doggett from the UK was crowned winner by a panel of internationally acclaimed photographers, including Canon Ambassador Brent Stirton and Getty Images photographer Toby Smith, for his entry “Visionary Changes.” Matt’s striking underwater shot of gannets fishing for food was selected for his technique, creativity and original and interesting interpretation of the brief, a story of change. “When gannets hit the water the shape of their eyes change instantly giving them perfect vision of the fish upon which they prey,” he said.

Photography Blog posted their exhaustive review of Canon’s new EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. The EF 35mm f/1.4L II is a highly regarded lens, well suited for travel photography and journalism. In the conclusion they write:

Image quality is outstanding. Chromatic aberrations are virtually non-existent thanks to the new Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics technology, geometric distortion is impressively low for a wide-angle lens, and the Sub-Wavelength Structure Coating (SWC) coatings successfully prevent contrast loss attributable to flare. The only real optical issues are some corner shading at the maximum aperture, something that every full-frame shooter has to put up with, especially when using wide angles, and a slight lack of critical edge sharpness between f/1.4-f/2.8 and f/16-f/22.
