A long rumored lens appears to be undergoing field tests by selected photographers, the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II. The announcement could occur in the first half of 2014. The rumor states the successor of the Canon EF 35mm f 1.4L USM (price & specs) is a bit wider and has slightly less weight. Also, at least one of the elements should have a new kind of coating. Filter thread is said to be 77mm. There have been patents in the past that are pointing to this new lens. It appears this lens will definitely be announced in 2014.

The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L is currently on sale for $1179 at B&H. The final price after having added the item to the cart and a $150 mail-in rebate.

Egami (translated) spotted Canon patents for three lenses that could been thought for the EOS M mirrorless system, a 5omm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4. Egami’s analysis of the patents suggests this interpretation, i.e. that these lenses are made for an APS-C mirrorless system. Sound exciting, having such primes for the EOS M would at least allow us to think that Canon is committed to their mirrorless system. More details and specs after the break.

Canon Patent: 35mm f/1.4 Lens – Successor of The EF 35mm f/1.4L On Its Way?

Canon Patent

This could be the patent for the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. Egami (translated) spotted a patent filed by Canon that’s related to a 35mm f/1.4 lens that appears to refer to the successor of the Canon EF 35mm f 1.4L USM (price & specs) lens (released in 1998). Not the first patent for a 35mm lens, and there was a rumor that Canon was field-testing a EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. More after the break.

Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS Review (photozone)

photozone reviewed the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS lens (price & specs). The review covers technical detail as well as posting sample pics.

In the conclusion they write:

Once more Canon delivered a a high performance lens with only a few weaknesses. The center performance is very good at max. aperture and excellent to downright superb at medium aperture settings. The borders are somewhat low in contrast at f/2 but very sharp when stopped down a bit. Lateral CAs are next to non-existent and distortions are pretty much irrelevant as well. The vignetting is nothing special though so you have to live with a high light fall-off at f/2. Canon was able to fix the bokeh issue that plagued the old EF 35mm f/2 – especially the critical background blur is very smooth now and better than most lenses in this focal length class. You will be able to spot some bokeh fringing in critical scenes when shooting fully open but that’s a typical behavior for such a fast lens anyway.

There is more to read, obviously. If you are on the fence for this high performing lens then be sure to check the review.
