Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM to be announced September 15th?

canon rumors

The previously rumored Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM could be announced on September 15th, Nokishita reports.

The new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens is rumored to feature an LCD display. September 15th is the day we expect Canon to announce the Canon EOS M5, and another new lens, the EF-M 18-150mm IS STM for the EOS M system (coming in black and silver color options).

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is going to replace the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM , a lens Canon introduced in 1995.

Canon patent shows how LCD displays on future lenses may look and what information is displayed

A Canon patent spotted by Digicame-Info shows what Canon’s engineers have in mind for the company’s future lenses. An LCD display on the lens that will show all kind of information.

From the images above it seems the lens LCD display will show information about distance/depth of field, and also about stabilisation issues on both axis’.

Cool patent. Currently, a replacement for the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS is rumored to have such a display.

A possible replacement for the Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS gets another mention. The Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS II is said to be the “first Canon lens with an LCD display built-in” but it is not clear yet “what information will be present on the digital display“. The lens is rumored to feature Nano USM and Canon’s latest image stabilisation technology.

I have to say that this rumor comes a bit as a surprise to me. I (and others) always thought the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS was the replacement for the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS. It’s true that the former is an “L” lens and the latter is not. However, the non-L EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS has some “L”-lens elements, and hence it sounded plausible to consider the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS as the replacement for the EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS.

Stay tuned…!
