Latest Magic Lantern Hack Uses Dual ISO to Obtain 14 Stops of Dynamic Range

Magic Lantern
Video frame from 5D Mark III – Bottom-left: ISO 100. Top-right: ISO 100/1600.

The Magic Lantern team delivers the next big gift to all Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon EOS 7D owners. The latest hack uses a trick to obtain 14 stops of Dynamic Range. The hack samples half of the sensor lines at ISO 100, and the other half at ISO 1600. The signals are then mixed and the result is an image that can reproduce 14 stops of DR, 3 stops more than you would get without the hack. According to ML hacker a1ex there are no motion artifacts and no difference in motion blur. More after the break.

Canon Rumor: EOS 7D Mark II Announcement not Earlier than September 2013, May Have New Sensor, New Auto-Focus System

Canon Rumor

The Canon EOS 7D

Latest Canon EOS 7D Mark II rumor. It is said that Canon will not announce the successor of the highly popular, and 4 year old, Canon EOS 7D until the Canon EOS 70D starts to ship regularly. Moreover, if there is no sign of Nikon announcing a D400, it could be that Canon will further delay the announcement until early 2014. The EOS 7D Mark II sensor should have “additional functionality”, and could subsequently be featured on the whole Canon APS-C line-up. This gets me a little puzzled since Canon introduced a new and innovative sensor with the EOS 70D, and it could be hard to top this sensor’s functionality (especially if considering how conservative Canon is regarding the release of new technology).

The most interesting part of the rumour: the EOS 7D Mark II could introduce a new, more advanced Auto-Focus system, and the talk is not about life-view AF. This AF system is said to going to be featured also on the replacement of the Canon EOS-1D X, so it should be a very sophisticated AF system. If Canon will really feature an AF system advanced enough for the EOS-1D X successor on an APS-C DSLR is something I would take with a grain of salt. But then…

Undertstanding the Auto-Focus System of the Canon EOS 7D

Interesting post by New Zealand based photographer Andrew S. Gibson. The almost 4 years old Canon EOS 7D (price & specs) is still an outstanding DSLR, with an advanced AF system not previously seen on a Canon APS-C sensor DSLR (and still not featured on any other Canon APS-C DSLR). The AF of the EOS 7D is more advanced than the one sported on the EOS 6D. If you want a more sophisticated AF system you have to go at least for the EOS 5D Mark III.
