Canon EF 85mm F1.2 vs Sony 85mm F1.4 GM comparison

Ef 85mm

Canon EF 85mm F1.2: B&H Photo, Adorama, Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, Canon Canada, Canon USA

Gary Fong compares Canon’s tried and true EF 85mm F1.2 lens against Sony’s latest G Master 85mm F1.4 lens. The Sony 85mm F1.4 got a lot of press lately and it’s interesting to see how it compares to one of Canon’s most regarded lens.

Please note that there is a small typo in the video: the Canon images are shot at f/1.2 and not f/1.8. You can download all test shots from Gary Fong’s dropbox folder, and compare them by yourself.

Sigma Advisory: Some Sigma lenses for Canon not fully compatible with EOS-1D X Mark II

Sigma-Logo

Sigma released a press release about compatibility issue of their 20mm F1.4 DG HSM “Art”, 35mm F1.4 DG HSM “Art” and 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM lenses with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II.

Press release:

Thank you for purchasing and using our products.

We have found that some SIGMA interchangeable lenses for CANON are not fully compatible with CANON EOS-1DX Mark II, which was released on April 28th. When certain lenses are attached to this camera, exposure of the image may not be accurate. We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we will make a further announcement on our website when specific details are finalised. In addition, please also refer to the below usage notice related to this announcement.

[Phenomenon]

When the lenses listed below are used and either “Evaluative Metering” or “Center-weighted Average Metering” is  selected in Metering Mode of the camera, the image could show some underexposure.

[Products concerned]

We are currently working on the firmware update for respective lenses, and the release dates will be announced later.

Usage Notice for customers who are using EOS mount SIGMA lenses on a CANON EOS-1DX Mark II
・ MO (Manual Override) function is unavailable with this camera (Full-time Manual function can be offered).
・ When using a SIGMA interchangeable lens for EOS, setting the corrections to [Disable] is recommended, as “Lens Correction” functions of the camera, such as Peripheral illumination correction, Chromatic aberration correction, Diffraction correction and Distortion correction, are not supported. If those functions are activated, the performance of lenses may not be accurate. This is not only for EOS-1DX Mark II, but also other camera bodies.

We appreciate your continued support for our company and products.

Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD officially announced

SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD
SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD

Tamron made if official and announced the SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD lens.

Tamron press release:

THE WORLD’S FIRST1 85MM F/1.8 LENS WITH VC FOR FULL-FRAME DSLR CAMERAS

Ultimate correction of aberrations and excellent resolving power with balanced bokeh

February 22, 2016, Commack, New York – Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of the SP 85mm F/1.8 Di VC USD (Model F016), the world’s first fast-aperture telephoto lens with VC (Vibration Compensation). Tamron’s acclaimed VC makes it possible to take handheld photographs in dim light or at night. The 85mm SP lens uses LD (Low Dispersion) and XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements in the optical design to minimize color fringing and to achieve sharp and clear image quality with high-fidelity color. It also achieves attractive bokeh that draws attention to the image foreground subject. In addition, Moisture-Resistant Construction has been added to prevent intrusion of moisture, and a highly durable Fluorine Coating has been applied to the top element surface to prevent condensation and repel smudge-causing substances. This new lens joins the 35mm F/1.8, 45mm F/1.8 and 90mm Macro in a lineup of SP series prime lenses that has been expanding since 2015. The lens will be on sale in the U.S. starting in April 2016 in Canon and Nikon mounts (the Sony2 mount to be launched at a later date). Pricing and delivery will be announced shortly.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

1. The world’s first 85mm fast-aperture lens with image stabilization

Tamron’s VC image stabilization system enables handheld use in dim light without flash. Camera movement—often too minute to be perceptible to the photographer—is the leading cause of unpleasant photographs. In addition, newer DSLR cameras with higher resolution and higher pixel densities are even more susceptible to subtle camera shake. The VC System, Tamron’s time-proven Vibration Compensation, keeps the sharpness at hand, even in moody, dim light when shutter speeds tend to be longer.

New Canon EF 85mm L lens on its way? [CW2]

EF 85mm F/1.2L

Canon might announce a new EF 85mm L lens in 2016, possibly at Photokina 2016.

The new 85mm is said to feature Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics first seen on the new EF 35mm f/1.4L II lens. Moreover, the new 85mm is weather sealed (as all recent L lenses), might have a new manual focus system, and it might be lighter. Will it still be f/1.2? No info so far.

We are currently flooded by Canon rumors. Take everything with a big grain of salt. The EF 85mm f/1.2L was released in 2003, a replacement is plausible.
