LOOK3 2015: a time for celebration and reflection

LOOK3 2015

Canon press release:

Held from 10-13 June in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, the 2015 edition of LOOK3 – the renowned photography festival originally conceived by Canon Master Nick Nichols – is promising to be the biggest and best yet…

Larry Fink, Walter Iooss, Vincent J. Musi and Piotr Naskrecki are just some of the many great photographers at this year’s event. Curated by Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine and Scott Thode, independent curator, the 2015 festival promises to be visually extraordinary and exhibiting artist and festival host Vincent Musi can’t wait to welcome visitors.

Visitors to LOOK3 will be greeted by the festival’s traditional ‘TREES’ exhibition, this year featuring large scale prints by Piotr Naskrecki which are suspended from the trees in Charlottesville’s historic centre.

“In a time when great photography is being created the world over, LOOK3 has always been about celebrating the people behind the camera,” he remarked to CPN.

Canon EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R shipping mid June

Based on what I have been told, various big European retailers are expecting first EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R batches more or less by the end of next week/beginning of the week after. Guess this is valid also for other retailers around the globe, especially in the USA.

Keep in mind that shipping dates may also be delayed because of unexpected issues. However, I am pretty confident both the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R will start shipping all over the globe from  mid June, with some delays to the last June week for smaller countries or markets Canon considers not a priority.

Canon patent to increase dynamic range with use of Neutral Density filter (using Dual Pixel AF)

p

Canon filed  patent to increase dynamic range by using a Neutral Density (ND) filter on half of the measured field. This is a pretty complex one and I am not 100% sure I got it right (any help welcome).

The described system works by getting different degrees of light intensity from the Dual Pixel auto-focus (DPAF) points (i.e. split pixels) on the sensor. The patent says the ND filter is placed on 50% of the measured field: different amounts of light hit the split AF pixels needed for DPAF (this means both of the split pixels are used to measure the DR). The result is an output that’s able to render an increased dynamic range to the sensor, and a easier to measure differential signal from the DPAF points. It is not as easy as I am trying to put it :-) To learn more about Canon’s Dual Pixel Auto-Focus technology have a look here.
