The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sensor was tested in DxOMark’s lab, and figures suggest it’s performance is behind the competition.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III has an overall score of 83. That’s less than the Nikon D850 (100) or the Sony a7R IV (99). Note that Nikon features a Sony-made sensor in the D850. To compare the 1DxIII with another sport oriented camera, the Sony a9 II, you can see the a9 II scores significantly better with 93. The EOS-1D X Mark III score is even behind the EOS-1D X Mark II (88).

We are firmly convinced that pure sensor performance figures do not describe a camera as a whole and are just one aspect of a camera. Never the less, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III having a sensor score that’s so much lower than the competition is something that at least Canon’s marketing department should be worried about.

DxOMark’s conclusion:

Sports journalism is a highly competitive field and requires a camera that can keep pace with the action unfolding in front of the lens. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III has been designed with that one goal in mind. Although we at DXOMARK test only sensor performance and no other features, at face value it’s an incredibly fast DSLR with not only blazing AF speed, incredible continuous shooting rates and a prodigious buffer, but also an equally impressive sensor. Admittedly, it’s not quite at the cutting edge in our metrics for sensor performance, but there’s far more to it than that.

Like the Nikon D5 and the Sony a9 II, such cameras are highly specific and a niche purchase. If you’re already a Canon user with a significant investment in lenses and other dedicated system accessories, then there’s not enough difference here in sensor dynamics to get you switch brands. If you’re new to the market, there’s a lot to consider, but even then the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III is still more than a worthy contender for your hard-earned cash.

Guess the video below will not make happy a lot of Canon fans. It’s about rolling shutter artifacts on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, and the lack of them on the Sony a9 II.

The video below, by liu yang, shows some rather bad rolling shutter artifacts at various settings on the EOS-1D X Mark III. No artifacts can be spotted on the Sony a9 II. Both are sports cameras, and that’s all I want to say.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark III Firmware Update Brings Lock-up Fix And 23.98p Video

As promised Canon released a Canon EOS-1D X Mark III firmware update.

Among other, minor things, firmware 1.1.0 fixes the “lock up issue”, i.e. the EOS-1D X Mark III locks up when the electronic level is set to ‘Show’ in the viewfinder and the shutter or AF-ON button is pressed. A bit weird but it happens. The short video below shows the lock-up issue.

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following enhancement and fixes:

  1. The option to capture full HD movies and 4K UHD movies in 23.98p frame rate has been added.
  2. The communication speed has been improved when connected via wired LAN.
  3. The “Browser Remote” function has been added.
  4. The function to transfer only protected images has been added.
  5. Corrects the phenomenon in which, when the electronic level is set to “Show” in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may freeze when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.
  6. Corrects the phenomenon in which the Custom Shooting Mode settings may change when the shooting mode is switched.

Firmware Version 1.1.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.0. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Canon will release a firmware update for the EOS-1D X Mark III in early April, as the company communicates through a product advisory:

To Users of EOS-1D X Mark III

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have confirmed that the following phenomenon may occur during use of the EOS 1D X Mark III digital SLR camera. A new firmware release is planned for early April; once the new firmware is ready, we will make an announcement on our website.

We sincerely apologise to users who may have experienced inconvenience due to this issue.

Phenomenon:
When the camera is used with the electronic level set to “Show” in the viewfinder display, in rare cases, the camera may not perform normally when operating the AF-ON button or shutter button.

Affected Product:
EOS 1D X Mark III (Firmware version 1.0.0)

Workaround:
Use the “Hide” setting for the electronic level in the viewfinder display.

Setting procedure: Menu / Set-up 2 tab / Viewfinder display / Electronic level* [Hide] *Default setting: [Hide]

Support:
In early-April 2020, we plan to release a firmware update to address the phenomenon listed above.
