Canon EOS R5 High ISO: Fashion Shot With ISO Up To 40,000

Eos R5 High Iso

How is the Canon EOS R5 high ISO performance? Nothing short of amazing. But a fashion shot with ISO up to 40,000 isn’t anything common.

Canon Explorer of Light Lindsay Adler tests the Canon EOS R5 high ISO on a fashion shot. She says:

How high can you go!? In this video, I compare the high ISO capabilities of the Canon R5 shooting fashion images ranging from 2,000 ISO up to 40,000 ISO! See for yourself what noise you find acceptable!

I found that one of my favorite images from this fashion shoot was captured at 20,000 ISO, and was definitely clean enough for social media use, and would quite likely be totally usable for magazine print publication! I was a bit shocked and pleasantly surprised!

Canon EOS R5 Review From Phillip Bloom (a hot and messy start)

Canon Eos R5 Review 8k Video Firmware Updste

Here is a Canon EOS R5 review, and as you can easily get from the title, it’s not entirely positive.

Philip Bloom has his take on the Canon EOS R5 in the videos below. He says:

This is my long term “review” of the Canon R5 and I’ve taken a different approach than normal in that I decided to split it into two much parts of a more manageable length. This isn’t about specs, it’s about really living with and using the camera over 4 months.

[…] This is not my usual review, and not strictly a review either. I’ve made two videos which take a look at the Canon R5, the first part is the backstory, the launch and my initial thoughts after buying one. This part is about the experience you get when using it rather than over analysing and going over all the specs as there are countless videos about that. The overheating issues are still a focus, but another focus is the autofocus….with animals. Plus there is a special guest near the end. :)

The overheating issue is also discussed. And here are the two videos. Keep in mind that this is a review coming from a videographer. Enjoy.

This Seriously Skilled Guy Watercooled A Canon EOS R5, And Then Found A Better Solution

Canon Eos R5

Here is a incredibly cool Canon EOS R5 hack, performed by a very talented guy with solid engineering skills (take this as a warning: don’t do it at home).

The guys behind DIY Perks have disassembled a Canon EOS R5 and applied a water-cooling system to the camera’s motherboard. Unlimited 8K recording time is achieved, no more overheating. However, the water-cooling hack as neat as it is, is a gimmick. These guys did far better.

Since a water cooled EOS R5 would be rather impractically out in the field, DIY Perks came up with a better idea and did some serious thermal engineering. They custom-made a copper heat sink and applied it with thermal paste (not thermal tape) to the CPU and DRAM chips on the camera’s motherboard. In environments that are not too hot this allows for continuous video recording without impairing the handling of the EOS R5. A small fan can be applied to the back of the R5 when it is used in warmer places. A professional looking solution that works.

The video below shows all steps and is very interesting. Kudos to the guys at DIY Perks.

Next Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 Firmware Might Eventually Bring 1080p/120fps Video

Canon Firmware EOS R6 Firmware

The last Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 firmware update was not what many were expecting. 1080p video at 120fps is rumored again, for the next firmware update.

Not sure if 1080p at 120fps is leaned more on the “wishful thinking” side or if it will really be implemented in a future firmware update. We think the chances are good the rumor is reliable. However, for the time being it’s murmured the the next EOS R5 and EOS R6 firmware update will deliver:

  • Canon Cinema RAW light addition
  • C-Log 3
  • 1080p @ 120fps

When can we expect to see this firmware update? Most likely somewhen between January and April 2021.

Stay tuned.
