28mm Lenses Shootout: Canon EOS R5 vs Leica Q2

Leica Q2

Here is a somewhat weird comparison between a Leica Q2 with built in 28mm lens and the Canon EOS R5 with a rather old EF 28mm f/1.8 lens. The lens on the Leica is newer, more expensive and a bit faster.

Alex Barrera quickly compares the Leica Q2 and the Canon EOS R5 in the video below. Enjoy.

Canon EOS R5 Firmware Update Released (version 1.4.0)

Eos R5 8k Video

As expected, Canon released a new firmware for the Canon EOS R5. Nothing earthshaking, and mostly video oriented.

You can download Canon EOS R5 firmware version 1.4.0 here.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

1) Adds support for outputting 8K/30p/10-bit video signals for ProRes RAW recording to ATOMOS’s Ninja V+ recorder* via HDMI.

  • If you have any questions about ATOMOS products, please contact ATOMOS directly.
  • Please note that the recorder may become hot.

2) Adds support for movie recording when the camera is connected to the CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S or CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS KAS S EF cinema lenses.

  • Still photography shooting is possible however performance is not guaranteed.
  • Movie shooting in vertical position is possible however performance is not guaranteed.
  • External power supply is required for AF operation during servo zoom operation. When there is no external power supply, AF operation is activated only when the servo zoom is not in use.

3) Adds simultaneous movie recording capability on card 1 and card 2, however RAW movies and RAW(Light) movies cannot be recorded simultaneously on card 1 and card 2.

4) Adds support for the VPG 400 (Video Performance Guarantee Profile), a standard based on the CFexpress 2.0 specification.

5) Improves operation stability when using the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM and RF600mm F4 L IS USM.

6) Fixes an issue in which, during HDMI connection, if the camera’s screen turns off, a zebra pattern is displayed via the HDMI output.

7) Fixes an issue in which sufficient image stabilization effects may not be attained immediately after the start of shooting.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.3.1. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.4.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

EISA Awards Assigned, Everyone Wins, Canon Too (EOS R5 & RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro)

Eisa Awards

EISA awards have been assigned. And as usual almost everyone in the industry got one. Canon got two.

Canon got EISA awards for the Canon EOS R5 and the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro lens.

Regarding the Canon EOS R5, the EISA folks says:

Canon’s highly-specified mirrorless all-rounder is feature-filled and built to last. It produces extremely sharp, high-resolution 45-million-pixel images, while being capable of recording both 8K and 4K video. It also boasts a high-speed, high-precision Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system, up to 8 stops of in-body image stabilisation, and high-speed continuous shooting at up to 20fps. The AI-based subject-recognition system is capable of detecting and tracking human eyes, faces, and bodies, as well as those of some animals. Combine these features with its robust build and superb handling, and there is probably no assignment that the R5 cannot take care of.

Regarding the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro:

While most manufacturers have built up their full-frame mirrorless lens ranges by replicating their most popular SLR designs, Canon has consistently been more imaginative. Its new RF-mount 100mm f/2.8 offers the highest magnification ratio of any autofocus macro lens, at 1.4x, allowing users of its EOS R-system cameras to fill the frame with a subject measuring just 26x17mm. It also gains a new spherical aberration control ring that adjusts the smoothness of blur in either the foreground or background. Together, these two innovations promise to open new avenues of creative expression for close-up photography.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About 8K On The Canon EOS R5

Canon Eos R5 Review 8k Video Firmware Updste

The Canon EOS R5 does 8K video. Here is a short review of the 8K video quality on the R5.

Coming from one of our favorite photo gear reviewer, Gordon Laing, the review below looks at how the Canon EOS R5 does 8K video. Some might argue 8K video on the EOS R5 is more a proof of concept than a fully implemented feature. Some might say worse. Your mileage my vary.

The video itself has been uploaded to YouTube with full 8K. More reviews by Gordon Laing are listed here. Follow Gordon on his site, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook.
